CHARLI XCX dominated the Brits tonight with five awards — and left fans in sheer delight at her outfit. The Brat singer-songwriter, 32, stunned on the red carpet in a see-through black dress with skimpy undies and no bra. And she stole the show inside London’s O2 — triumphing in the Artist, Album, Songwriter, Song of the Year and Dance Act categories. Her runaway success — in five of the six categories she was nominated for — comes after we revealed yesterday that she was planning on taking a break from music. Last night’s Brits was dominated by women for a second year running, with 11 acts triumphing in 17 categories. Host Jack Whitehall had the O2 audience howling early on when he said multi-nominated Charli “has asked not to perform on the show so she could get drunk”. US singer Sabrina Carpenter opened with an X-rated medley of her hit Espresso with Rule, Britannia — as dancers transformed into the King’s Guard with bearskin hats. At one point, she went down on her knees as a soldier gave a cheeky wink to the camera. However, the routine — broadcast on ITV before the watershed — was cropped at the soldier’s waist. Charli’s mammoth awards haul kicked off with the Song of the Year for Guess featuring Billie Eilish. Clutching the trophy, she said: “Yeah, this is cool, I am really happy that a song about underwear now has a Brit award — very important stuff. I am sure that proves something about songwriting but I am not sure what.” Charli also revealed she asked Billie to feature three days before they shot the video, adding: “Thank you Billie for running and gunning it with me.” Charli’s Brat also scooped Album of the Year. Its global success saw “brat” become 2024’s word of the year. It also inspired the phrase “brat summer”, a reference to young women embracing a party-girl attitude. Of the term, Charli previously said: “It’s like this girl who goes to a rave and she is wearing a tank top. You can kind of see her nipples through it.” She added: “I know what this girl wants and that girl is me.’” And her striking outfit last night stayed faithful to that brat attitude. The Sun’s fashion expert Emily Regan said: “Her dress is designed by Dilara Findikoglu, who she frequently wears. It features black panelling across the chest, creating a corset-like effect that extends down it. "True to her brat style, you can subtly see her nipples through the sheer fabric.” Her Brit triumphs come after a successful night at The Grammys last month, when she won Best Dance Pop Recording, Best Dance/Electronic Album and Best Recording Packaging. 'I want to act' And she might be going out on a high — after we revealed yesterday she wanted to start acting. Charli, who took her stage name from her display moniker on chat site MSN Messenger, said: “It’s probably no music for a while … quite a while. "I also want to act now. I’m already there and thinking about that stuff a little bit more.” Two years ago, she criticised the Brits’ voting academy for failing to nominate any female artists in the Artist of the Year category. She said: “We’re doing everything right. I don’t think it’s our fault. I think it might be theirs.” Away from music, Charli plans to marry The 1975 drummer George Daniel later this year. Among other winners last night was Sabrina Carpenter, who was awarded the Global Success gong by celebrity fan and actress Millie Bobby Brown. Sabrina, 25, told the audience she came to the UK with her mum ten years ago, hardly knowing anyone but dreaming of making her music known. In a very primarily tea-drinking country you guys streamed the s**t out of Espresso.Sabrina Carpenter She went on: “This week I get to headline the O2 because of you guys and the Brits have given me this award and it feels like such an insane honour. “In a very primarily tea-drinking country you guys streamed the s**t out of Espresso. "You’ve really understood my dry sense of humour because your sense of humour is so dry. So I love y’all even more than you understand.” US singer-songwriter Chappell Roan scooped International Artist of the Year and International Song of the Year with Good Luck, Babe! Meanwhile, Sam Fender triumphed in Alternative/Rock Act, while five-piece jazz band Ezra Collective scooped Group of the Year. The Brits’ Rising Star award went to Myles Smith, while International Group of the Year went to Irish band Fontaines D.C. The Best New Artist gong was awarded to indie rock band The Last Dinner Party, made up of female and non-binary-identifying musicians. Stormzy picked up the Hip Hop/Grime/Rap Act gong while ex-Little Mix singer Jade Thirlwall won the Pop Act award, and Raye got Best R&B. Among the near-misses was Teddy Swims, whose track Lose Control was up for International Song of the Year. The US star turned up to the red carpet covered in cuddly bears and toys. Danny lets McFly on AI danger McFLY rocker Danny Jones has voiced his alarm over AI’s potential effects on copyrighted music. The I’m A Celeb winner, 38, said: “Any art that’s copied should be rewarded. “Credit should be given where it’s due and, you know, if it’s as simple as if the AI is copying the art of somebody, it should be given credit for.” Artists taking to the red carpet were asked to record messages backing the Make It Fair campaign which highlights the AI threat. Its poster was also projected on to huge screens around the O2 Arena. Rob chimp a snorty boy ROBBIE Williams’ chimpanzee alter-ego cheekily pretended to snort a line during the ceremony. The ape, who portrayed Robbie in his Better Man biopic, was seated with guests when it picked up the table’s number card. The chimp then pretended to chop up powder and made a snorting motion. Winner Jade gets big hand SINGER Jade Thirlwall goes off in a Hulk as she poses on the carpet with the fatsuit-clad actor from her music video. The ex-Little Mix star, 32, wore a pale blue gown with flowers alongside 6ft 10in actor Srbo Markovic — in a white suit. He appeared in her Angel Of My Dreams video as a giant music boss.
