Chelsea face tough test in Women's Super League with quadruple still alive
@Source: mirror.co.uk
In a packed Sunday of Barclays Women’s Super League action, league leaders Chelsea will face the tough test of a West Ham side in resurgence. The west London club will likely be most grateful to see a team other than Manchester City line up against them as they reached the end of their four consecutive matches on Thursday. City will be even more thankful having lost three of those four and will hope to bounce back from Champions League disappointment against a Brighton side who have proved a stern test this season. Elsewhere, Manchester United are set for a visit from an Everton team transformed since the turn of the year. While Chelsea may have previously welcomed a visit from West Ham , their results this month give weight to oft repeated cliches that there are no easy games. The Hammers took points off fourth-placed Manchester City in March as Manuela Pavi’s stoppage time equaliser cancelled out Bunny Shaw’s late strike to draw 1-1. They also twice took a two-goal lead against Arsenal before being reeled back into a 4-3 defeat, proving their ability to mix it with the best and Chelsea will need to recover fast from their midweek Champions League comeback against Manchester City. Sonia Bompastor’s side are still hard to look past however, undefeated in the league and in scintillating form after overturning a 2-0 deficit against City to beat them 3-2 on aggregate. It was a perfect display at Stamford Bridge and they have the squad depth to deal with any tired legs back at Kingsmeadow. A flagging Manchester City side will travel to Brighton to face a Seagulls side who have fallen off a cliff edge from their early season form. Bunny Shaw was the difference the last time the sides met as City claimed 1-0 victory, but she along with a sizeable chunk of their squad are ruled out with injury. The four consecutive games against Chelsea have taken their toll on an already depleted squad as the Blues’ ten-strong bench at Stamford Bridge on Thursday was sat across from just the five City players Nick Cushing had at his disposal. It will depend on which Brighton turn up as to how hard they are pushed as the Seagulls became only the second team to take points off Chelsea this season but most recently fell to defeat against Leicester City. The pressure is on for Manchester United to pick up points sooner rather than later as they face a run-in consisting of all three of their top four counterparts. An early Grace Clinton goal separated the sides last time out in a 1-0 United victory, but Everton will provide an ever tougher test for the league’s best defence this time out. The Red Devils showed their vulnerabilities earlier in the month in a 3-1 loss to Liverpool and Everton will be confident of taking advantage themselves with Kelly Gago and Toni Payne in scintillating form. Liverpool have looked an entirely new entity since interim boss Amber Whiteley took the reins a month ago. Despite falling to an unconvincing 4-0 loss to Arsenal last weekend, they defeated the Gunners in the FA Cup and earned their first-ever win at Anfield against Manchester United. Such form will be a cause for concern for an Aston Villa side desperately in need of points who are yet to enjoy such a fruitful ‘new manager bounce’. The Villans sit just one point above the relegation zone after losing 3-1 to Crystal Palace and looked without fight ever since, losing 4-0 to Manchester United last time out. They will need to turn their form around soon if they want the fight for survival to remain in their hands. Aston Villa’s saving grace will be the fact that their relegation rivals Crystal Palace face an Arsenal side fresh off the back of an inspired comeback against Real Madrid . The Gunners overturned a two-goal deficit to win 3-2 on aggregate in their Champions League quarter-final. But Renee Slegers’ side have struggled on pitches that do not match up to the pristine surface at the Emirates and will face tired legs after their midweek encounter. Crystal Palace know their survival is tantalisingly close after their triumph against Villa but fell to a limp 3-0 defeat to Everton most recently. The Foxes have enjoyed some late season form, having discovered their ability to score. They ran up a three-goal cushion in the first-half against Brighton before facing a nervy close to win 3-2 after two second-half Brighton goals. Tottenham on the other hand have struggled in front of goal in the absence of their captain Beth England through injury. Robert Vilahamn’s side have looked unconvincing throughout March, scoring just one goal in defeats to Manchester City, Brighton and West Ham.
