Chelsea told they spent £52m on an 'absolutely and utterly invisible' player

Chelsea star Christopher Nkunku has been slammed as “absolutely and utterly invisible” after another underwhelming season. The French forward was signed from German side RB Leipzig for £52m in 2023. But injuries ruined Nkunku’s first season as he scored just three goals across the entire campaign. Things have improved this campaign with 14 strikes to his name but just three of them have come in the Premier League. And ex-Liverpool star Steve Nicol has torn into the forward for his performances, including an underwhelming display in Chelsea ’s recent 1-0 defeat to London rivals Arsenal at the Emirates. He said: “Nkunku was absolutely and utterly invisible. In fact, he’s been invisible since he went to Chelsea. At least [Pedro] Neto was running around and looked interested." While Nicol has made his feelings very clear on Nkunku, the striker has been defended by ex- Arsenal star Paul Merson. He has claimed that Maresca has been playing him out of position during his time with Chelsea. Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “Christopher Nkunku’s position is not on the wing. I feel sorry for him. I like him, I think he’s a good player. He’s one that plays behind the centre-forward. “He’s an intelligent footballer, connects things, but the problem is Palmer’s been outstanding. I don’t think Chelsea were foreseeing Palmer being as good as what he was hence why they bought Nkunku for a lot of money.” Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca gave his verdict on Nkunku’s role in the side last month after he was linked with a move away. Bayern Munich and Manchester United were both reportedly interested in him. Could Nkunku be considered a Chelsea flop? Share your thoughts in the comments below But Maresca insisted that Nkunku had an important part to play for the remainder of the season. He said: “Can I see him showing his best and potential? Absolutely. I was with the club and we were sure before the transfer window that Christo was one of the players that our intention was to keep him.” Nkunku will certainly be aiming to have an impact for Chelsea over the coming months. Maresca’s side are embroiled in a battle to secure a spot in the Champions League for next season, while they have also reached the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League and will play Polish side Legia Warsaw. But domestic action has been paused over the next fortnight due to the March international break. Nkunku will not be taking to the pitch though having been left out of the France squad for an upcoming double-header against Croatia.
