Cheltenham Festival 2025: Day 4 tips for Gold Cup, County Hurdle and more
@Source: dailyrecord.co.uk
By Bob Cross And just like that we are on day four of the Festival – Gold Cup Day. When we look back on this festival I am sure we will remember 2025 for a number of reasons. The emotional wins for Marine Nationale and Doddiethegreat added to that the stumbles by two Champion Hurdlers and another Scottish trained winner and we have the makings of a wonderful journal. There may well be more to come as we go into the final day of the meet with Gallopin des Champs chasing his third Gold Cup in a row. We start with the JCB Triumph Hurdle at 1.20. Wille Mullins has won four of the past five runnings of this race and he has given himself a fighting chance by entering eleven of the eighteen runners! I am taking him on here, I fancy the Gavin Cromwell trained HELLO NEIGHBOUR . He has won all his four starts under rules and was super impressive when winning a Grade 1 at Leopardstown last month. My each way selection is LADY VEGA ALLEN who finished behind our main selection in the February event mentioned but, with Paul Townend selecting to pilot , I suspect there may have been some improvement since then. Next up, at 2.00, is the County Hurdle . Morebattle Hurdle winner, CRACKING RHAPSODY , is in line for a bumper bonus if he can follow that success with a win here. That may not be out of the question for this Scottish owned and trained improving six year old. At odds of around 33/1 I will be having a small each way wager. KARGESE was last year's Triumph Hurdle runner up and, in the hurdling sphere, only Majborough and Sir Gino have finished in front of her. That is exceptional form and I think the mare will be too good for this field. The 2.40 is the Mares' Chase and i am siding with a Willie Mullins inmate. DINOBLUE (n/b) finished second in this race last year. Since then she had a go taking on the Grade 1 two milers before dropping back down in class to win a listed mares race at Naas last month. My each way selection is last years winner of this race LIMERICK LACE. She has not had the best year since winning that event but I am hoping the return to this special place will bring out the best in her. The tapes go up at 3.20 for the Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle . After having success on Tuesday with Myretown, Lucinda Russell sends out the unbeaten DERRYHASSEN PADDY to take on the big boys. The seven lengths easy win at Ayr in February last year had us all scribbling the name in our notebooks. It was November before we seen him winning again at Uttoxeter then he showed a real bit of determination to win at Windsor by the shortest of noses. If he brings his A game here he will be in with a fighting chance of making the frame. Henry De Bromhead has had a quiet time of it by his standards recently but his yard have looked as if they are turning things around and the four places and two wins round here this week so far may not be the end of the matter. THE BIG WESTERNER has won both her starts over hurdles and, gets an extremely handy seven pound sex allowance which just might be enough to see the popular De Bromhead back in the winners enclosure. Then it is the main event, The Gold Cup which is off at 4pm. The last two years the winner has been GALLOPIN DES CHAMPS and only Best Mate, Arkle, Golden Miller and Cottage Rake have managed to win more than two – so he is looking to join illustrious company. In my opinion, if he stays on his feet he wins – it is as simple as that (although as we have learned this week this is not that easy!). THE REAL WHACKER probably found the ground a bit too slow when he tackled this event last year. He showed in November that he has retained his ability when winning the Charlie Hall and he confirmed this with a fourth place in the King George. If he gets the race run to suit he is capable of a place – at a big price. The Hunter's Chase is off at 4.40 and it is for amateur riders. The horse that has been on my radar for months is FAIRLY FAMOUS (NAP) . He has had two spins round here and won both contests with ease. Gina Andrews takes the ride and she has already lit Cheltenham up with two superb rides this week finishing fifth in the Kim Muir and second in the Cross Country. Add to this the fact that the horse is now trained by the jockeys mother and you have, hopefully, a recipe for success. My each way selection is ONTHEROPES . The gelding was a half decent handicap chaser for Willie Mullins. Now eleven years old he has entered the Hunter Chasing club. He finished second in February behind Ryehill in Naas and I am hoping the stiffer obstacles will play to his advantage here. The curtain comes down on the Festival at 5.20 with the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle . I am going to select two horses which I will back each way. NO ORDINARY JOE is owned by JP McManus and trained by Nicky Henderson a partnership that has had many success's through the years. The nine year old was second in this event two years ago and hasn't really done much since but his run last time out at Warwick when finishing a close fourth, carrying top weight, suggests he may not be quite ready to retire. It was a disappointment that Langer Dan was withdrawn from the stayers hurdle yesterday due to illness. His owner, Mr Colm Donlon, will be hoping NURSE SUSAN can provide the cure to his woes. Like Langer, she is trained by the super shrewd Dan Skelton and would not be lining up if she did not have a fighting chance. Bob's Barmy Bookie Buster is where we try to find the big return for little investment. We are looking for big each way prices – taking advantage of extra bonus places being offered. Today we offer up a five pence each way lucky thirty one with Skybet. Total cost £ 3.10. 1.20 Willy De Houelle (Paying 4 Places) 2.00 Cracking Rhapsody (Paying 6 Places) 3.20 Wendigo (Paying 5 Places) 4.40 Fairly Famous (Paying 4 Places) 5.20 Wodhooh (Paying 6 Places) And that is us for another year! Look out for Worth A Few Bob tips on the back page of the Hamilton Advertiser.
