Chris Woakes On Fracturing Rishabh Pant's Toe: 'I Thought He Might Run At Me'

England pacer Chris Woakes, whose yorker on Day 1 of the Old Trafford Test ended up injuring Rishabh Pant, has said he had intended it to be a slower ball in anticipation of the wicketkeeper dancing down the crease. Woakes said that he didn’t think Pant would try to reverse sweep him at all.
Pant missed the audacious shot and got hit flush on the side of his toe. He could not put further pressure on it and had to be stretchered off the ground. Live pictures showed immediate swelling and blood. He was taken to the hospital and has reportedly fractured his fifth metatarsal (a thin, vulnerable bone).
“He’s quite unpredictable; he doesn’t give you many cues, but sometimes you get a gut feeling that he’s about to do something,” Woakes told Sky Sports. “He’d played five or six deliveries normally, so I had a feeling. I didn’t think it would be a reverse sweep! I thought he might run at me, so I tried to bowl a slower ball; it came out full and hit him on the foot. It wasn’t intended to be a yorker, but the plan was to take the pace off.”
The injury will force him out of wicketkeeping duties from this Test and sideline him completely from the final Test, from July 31.
BCCI’s latest update on Rishabh Pant
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Pant rejoined the team at Old Trafford after the start of play on the second day. He will be replaced by Dhruv Jurel as the wicketkeeper for the remainder of the Test while Pant will be able to bat if the team needs.
“Rishabh Pant, who sustained an injury to his right foot on Day 1 of the Manchester Test, will not be performing wicket-keeping duties for the remainder of the match. Dhruv Jurel will assume the role of wicket-keeper. Despite his injury, Rishabh Pant has joined the team on Day 2 and will be available to bat as per team requirements,” the BCCI said.
