Christian Horner makes Red Bull statement as Ferrari make Lewis Hamilton admission

The new F1 season has gotten off to a riveting start, filled with unexpected twists and turns. However, for the Ferrari team, the excitement has been far from positive. Lewis Hamilton's season took another hit following his disqualification from the Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday, adding to his earlier disappointment of a 10th place finish in Melbourne. Hamilton's fellow Ferrari driver, Charles Leclerc, hasn't seen much success either. After an underwhelming eighth place in Australia, he too faced disqualification in Shanghai, marking the first instance where both Ferrari drivers have been disqualified from the same Formula 1 race. Hamilton saw his sixth-place finish at the Chinese Grand Prix annulled because his car failed to meet the required ride height, as excessive wear was found on the plank underneath his vehicle. Leclerc's car didn't escape scrutiny either, being recorded under the minimum weight of 800kg during post-race inspections. Ferrari acknowledged their responsibility for the infractions through a post-race statement: "Both our cars were found not to conform to the regulations for different reasons. Car 16 [Leclerc] was found to be underweight by one kilogram, and car 44's [Hamilton] rearward skid wear was found to be 0.5mm below the limit.", reports the Mirror . They elaborated on the causes, stating: "Charles was on a one-stop strategy today and this meant his tyre wear was very high, causing the car to be underweight. With regard to Lewis' skid wear, we misjudged the consumption by a small margin. "There was no intention to gain any advantage. We will learn from what happened today and make sure we don't make the same mistakes again. Clearly, it's not the way we wanted to end our Chinese GP weekend, neither for ourselves, nor for our fans whose support for us is unwavering." With just two races down, Ferrari currently sit fifth in the Constructors' Championship behind McLaren, Mercedes, Red Bull, and Williams. In terms of drivers, Hamilton and Leclerc are already trailing by over 30 points behind the current leader Lando Norris, who had a harrowing conclusion to Sunday's race. The British driver, fresh from his win in Melbourne barely over a week ago, had to be content with second place at the Shanghai GP due to a braking problem plaguing his McLaren. As he was narrowing the distance on his team-mate and race winner Oscar Piastri, his team urged him to "ease off" amid fears that his brakes could give way under continued pressure. Norris initially disregarded the warning from his team, but ultimately heeded their advice when informed that the issue had escalated to "critical". Reflecting upon the ordeal, Norris admitted: "It was scary. It's like my worst nightmare. "The thought of brake failure is what haunts me in my nightmares, and in the final laps, I was dropping three to four seconds – it was genuinely frightening. Thankfully, we managed to make it to the finish line." Norris now sits eight points clear at the top, with reigning champ Max Verstappen hot on his heels. The Dutch driver secured second place in Melbourne and fourth in Shanghai, shouldering the bulk of Red Bull's efforts, as new teammate Liam Lawson – who took over from Sergio Perez last season – has yet to score any points. Lawson's struggles began with a crash in Melbourne, followed by a mere 12th-place finish in Shanghai, sparking rumours that Red Bull might consider swapping him for Racing Bulls' Yuki Tsunoda. Team boss Christian Horner hinted at deliberations about Lawson's position. "There's always going to be speculation in the paddock," said Horner. "As I say, we've only just finished the race here. We'll take away the info and have a good look at it. "I think Liam's had a tough couple of races, a tough weekend here... Liam is obviously confidence-wise struggling with the car at the moment, which is why we made some significant changes today to see if we could find a more confidence-inspiring set-up for him." When quizzed about the possibility of taking Lawson's spot, Tsunoda was open: "Yes, why not? 100 per cent." However, Lawson was quick to defend his position, asserting he was quicker than Tsunoda and wouldn't give up his seat at Red Bull without a battle. "He can say what he wants, to be honest. I raced against him for years in the junior categories and I beat him," Lawson fumed. "And I did that in F1 as well. He can say what he wants, but it's obviously extremely tough. It's not something I enjoy and I'm honestly working as hard as I can. "I don't have time to test the car and get used to it, because we are already in the season and every race we lose points. That's what I meant when I said I don't have time. But I'm not stupid, I know I'm here to perform and if I don't do that, I'm gone. I'm focused on getting used to the car as quickly as possible. We're not happy and none of us are happy. I don't know what else to say about that." Despite Lawson's current difficulties, Horner still believes in his considerable talent, acknowledging that the team is not harnessing it effectively at present. "I think Liam still has got potential, we're just not realising that at the moment," he remarked. "I think the problem for him is, he's had a couple of really tough weekends, he's got all the media on his back. The pressure just naturally grows in this business, and I feel very sorry for him. You can see it's very tough on him at the moment. "He's a young guy, we've got a duty to look after him and we're going to do the best that we can to support him."
