Legendary figure skaters Christopher Dean and Jayne Torvill have reassured their fans after an incident where Jayne took a fall during a live performance. The Nottingham duo are known for their remarkable 16 gold medal haul from World, European, and British Championships in figure skating. Their standout moment occurred at the Sarajevo 1984 Winter Olympics when they earned the coveted 'perfect' score, a triumph no other ice dancers have matched since. That performance, watched by over 24 million on UK television, remains one of the proudest instances in British sports. The pair, who hung up their competitive boots in 1998, have remained in the limelight as Dancing on Ice judges on ITV . They announced their retirement from performing together in February last year. Their goodbye tour, entitled 'Torvill and Dean: Our Last Dance', started at the OVO Arena in Wembley on April 12. On leaving the ice stage, the renowned duo mentioned: "Whilst we will continue to work together off the ice, this will be the final time we will skate together following our 50-year partnership. But not without celebrating one final time with all of our incredible fans across the UK, who have supported us constantly over many years.", reports Wales Online . Having wowed crowds in London, Belfast, Sheffield, and Nottingham, the celebrated ice duo faced an unforeseen twist at their recent Birmingham spectacle. While performing their legendary Bolero from the Olympics, Jayne Torvill took a tumble before a packed audience at the BP Pulse Live Arena on Sunday, April 27. Jayne, 67, unexpectedly hit the ice, drawing a collective sharp intake of breath from spectators. Nevertheless, she demonstrated the poise and professionalism characteristic of her years on the ice by rising swiftly to continue the routine. After the performance, her partner Christopher Dean addressed attendees to ease any concerns: "Thank you so much. As you can see, sometimes it gets scary out here. Scary, scary - for Jayne anyway." Christopher, entwined both personally and professionally with fellow ice skating star Karen Barber since 2011, offered his gratitude to those present: "It has been a terrific show and thank you to my wonderful skaters here and to Jayne. We are really honoured that you spend your time to come out and see us on a Sunday afternoon and share some of our 50-year career highlights. It's been so memorable and we will always remember today. Thank you for your memories everyone." The mishap was reportedly due to a defect in the ice surface, according to representatives of Torvill and Dean, who voiced hope that there would be no more such incidents for the remainder of their tour. The 44 year old presenter, who has been steering the ITV competition since its original series from 2006 to 2012 and rejoined for its comeback in 2018, took to social media with a snapshot from the 2025 finale. The finale saw Coronation Street's Sam Aston take the crown, accompanied by her heartfelt words: "A huge thank you to @itv, The brilliant team, Crew, Celebrities and Everyone who has been part of our Dancing on Ice family over the last 19 years. "Every year, just when January felt at its greyest, Dancing on Ice arrived like a burst of glittering, dazzling light, warm, joyful, and full of heart... It has been an absolute privilege to work alongside true national treasures Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, and to have a front-row seat to their breathtaking skating. "Watching them glide across the ice was nothing short of pure magic... A special thanks must also go to Arnica, Deep Heat, shapewear and fake tan, unsung heroes of the rink! .. "I will miss it hugely, but I count myself so lucky to have had it for as long as we did. Finally and most importantly, thank you to you for watching, you're the BEST!".
