CIAO inducts Class of 2025 to Soccer Hall of Fame, hands out 21 scholarships

The Community Italian-American Organization of the Berkshires hosted its annual Soccer Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Thursday, welcoming in the Class of 2025, while recognizing 21 local high school standouts with scholarships. The newest Hall of Famers included Bob Berube, Rex Green, John Haddad, Tony DeMartino, Brian Farley, Mark Girard, Kate Simonelli Hastings, Jared Dodge, Matt Begrowicz, Nick Masiero, Allie Supranowicz and Maddie Sprague. Committee Chairmen Al Belanger and Patrick West introduced inductees and scholarship winners at the event. Scholarships were awarded to one player from each of Berkshire County's 21 high school soccer teams, chosen by coaches. The nomination committee included, in addition to Belanger and West, Chris Dumas and Richard Asher. Marisa Andrews led the banquet committee and Nikki O’Neil was the architect of the booklet. Sweatshirts to each of the scholarship winners were provided by AtoZ Lettering, operated by Mark and Jeff Reynolds. Berube is a 1967 graduate of Wahconah, who went on to play four years of college soccer. However, he enters the Hall after spending 33 years as a Berkshire County official, refereeing all levels of the sport. Green was an All-Star player for Pittsfield High until graduating in 1978. He went on to play Division I soccer at Brown University. Haddad played for PHS just after Green, graduating in 1982. An All-Western Mass. player, he went on to compete collegiately at Western New England. DeMartino played just one year of soccer for Pittsfield High, graduating in 1983, but was a star goalie who went on to play at Union College. Farley, who graduated Wahconah in 1985, was a fellow official to Berube for many years. He was also a strong high school player and went on to play at Bridgewater State. Girard played at Mount Greylock and graduated in 1996 after helping the Mounties to the state championship in '95. He scored the winning goals in both the state semis and, in overtime of the state title game. Simonelli Hastings graduated Taconic in 2005 as a standout goalie. She walked onto the team at Framingham State and worked herself into a three-year starter for the Rams. Dodge graduated Wahconah in 2007 as one of the top defenders in the region and a Western Mass. champion. Begrowicz graduated Saint Joseph's in 2013 as a basketball and soccer star, scoring 28 goals his senior year. Masiero also graduated in 2013 as an All-Western Mass. player for Monument Mountain. A four-year varsity player, he continued to excel at Skidmore, leading his college team to multiple Liberty League finals. Supranowicz graduated from Pittsfield in 2014 as part of the powerhouse Generals that were unbeaten in the Berkshires for five straight seasons. She continued playing soccer at Union College and was All-Liberty League Honorable Mention. Sprague graduated Wahconah in 2015 as an all-around standout, anchoring one of the most feared defenses in Western Mass. A four-year starter and two-time captain, she was All-Western Mass. and led the Warriors to a sectional final in her senior year. Everett); Mai O’Connor and Will Igoe (Mt. Greylock); Molly Ferguson Pope and Gustavo De Oliveira (Pittsfield); Eva Matkovska and Jeremiah Cudjoe (Taconic); Kathryn Perone and Jason Moynihan (Wahconah).
