Holidaymakers often find themselves in the crosshairs of pickpockets . Train stations, popular tourist hotspots , and bustling areas tend to be the most notorious for theft. However, there are certain European destinations where tourists are particularly vulnerable to falling prey to pickpockets. A recent study by the travel experts at Quotezone.co.uk has pinpointed the top European country that's most plagued by pickpocketing. According to spokesperson Tiffany Mealiff: "European cities are famously popular tourist destinations for sightseeing, with the recent surge in holidaymakers, unfortunately this also makes them some of the danger zones for pickpocketing. "With many people starting to plan out the details for their summer holidays, we are warning holidaymakers to be aware of the potential hazards that come with travelling to these tourist hotspots." Italy takes the top spot as the European holiday destination where British tourists are most likely to have their valuables pilfered, reports the Express . Rome's Trevi Fountain emerged as the worst attraction for pickpocketing, with over 470 mentions of 'pickpockets' in Tripadvisor reviews. This popular water feature draws in thousands of tourists daily, but beware of lurking thieves. France ranked second as the worst destination for pickpocketing, with Paris' iconic Eiffel Tower being the most targeted spot. The City of Lights, Paris , was thrust into the limelight last summer as it hosted the Summer Olympics and has ramped up its tourist tax. Despite Barcelona's notorious reputation for pickpockets, Spain only ranks third in terms of destinations most frequented by thieves, with Las Ramblas being the hotspot for such encounters.
