Cleveland.com Boys Bowling All-Stars 2025: Meet the best from Northeast Ohio
@Source: cleveland.com
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Prior to high school, Padua freshman bowler Zachary Mayne had never had a bowling coach; he has been a self-taught bowler since second grade. However, in this year’s Division I OHSAA state tournament, Mayne soared above the competition, finishing first overall with a three-game series record of 858 (previous state tournament record was 805). He was over 100 points ahead of his nearest competitor, and earned the title of cleveland.com Boys Bowler of the Year for 2025. “My way of it was just be me,” Mayne said. “Just be who I know how to be on the lanes. Just one frame at a time, go through the same mindset every time of just focus on this frame, focus on what we need to.” Mayne began his state tournament series with a pair of 279 games before bowling a 300 to cap off his record-setting performance. It was another record (previous was 298), and it was Mayne’s eighth 300 game of his bowling career. “Honestly, it felt amazing, being a freshman,” Mayne said. “I never thought I’d be able to do that on the big stage, so being able to do that felt amazing.” Despite being a freshman in a sea of mostly older bowlers, Mayne was far from inexperienced. In second grade, Mayne wanted to play CYO basketball. However, basketball wasn’t offered until third grade, so he picked another winter sport: bowling. He hasn’t stopped bowling since. “I just ended up falling in love with the sport,” Mayne said. He credits his mother for helping him on “the mental side of the game,” but in terms of the technical aspects of bowling, he is “completely self-taught.” According to Mayne, his biggest accomplishment before high school was in July 2024, when he qualified for the Junior Team USA developmental program, the developmental team for the USA Olympics. Mayne earned his spot through the Junior Gold national bowling tournament, in which he competed in the U15 age group against 613 other bowlers. He finished second after the final qualifier round, earning him his spot on the US developmental U15 team. He will go to Dallas this summer to train with Team USA. Overall, Mayne said that it felt amazing to be able to represent his school and community by placing so high at the state tournament. “Knowing that, going into [the state tournament], I had a lot of support, and that I was able to perform at the highest that I possibly could at that time, to give back to them felt amazing,” Mayne said.
