Coastal flooding expected during afternoons on Maui, Big Isle

The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flooding statement for Maui County and Hawaii island during afternoon high tides, effective through Thursday.
Minor coastal flooding is expected along coastlines of Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui, and Hawaii island during peak high tide each afternoon.
“Peak monthly high tides combined with water levels that are running higher than predicted will lead to minor flooding along the shoreline and in low-lying coastal areas of Maui County and the Big island,” said NWS in the statement. “Coastal flooding is expected during the daily peak high tide each afternoon.”
Weather officials warn of the potential flooding of beaches that are normally dry, minor coastal erosion, and saltwater inundation.
“Avoid driving through flooded roadways,” said NWS. “If you are forced to drive through salt water, be sure to rinse your vehicle with fresh water. Move electronics, vehicles or other valuables to higher ground.”
Additionally, the public should secure canoes or other watercraft stowed on beaches.
A small craft advisory is also in effect for all coastal waters and channels east of Oahu, except windward Hawaii island waters, through 6 p.m. Wednesday.
