Gauff and Andreeva have played each other only twice so far, with both meetings happening in 2023. They last met at the 2023 U.S. Open in the second round, where Gauff won 6-3, 6-2. The American won her maiden Grand Slam at the tournament that year. Before that, they faced off at the 2023 French Open, with Gauff bouncing back from a set down to win 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-1 in the third round against Andreeva, who was making her Grand Slam main-draw debut at the clay-court major at that time. Gauff, 21, and 18-year-old Andreeva are the two youngest players in the Top 20 on the women’s tours. A video of Gauff’s post-match interview, shortly after she defeated Belinda Bencic, was shared on social media and appeared to show the moment the power outages reached Spain’s capital. Fourth seed Gauff beat Tokyo Olympics champion Bencic 6-4, 6-2 to book her place in the last eight of Madrid for the first time, while seventh seed Andreeva defeated qualifier Yuliia Starodubtseva 6-1, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals for a second year in a row. Andreeva is already a two-time WTA 1000 champion this year, having lifted the trophies in Dubai and Indian Wells. Gauff, on the other hand, has reached the quarterfinals of every WTA 1000 tournament on the current calendar except Miami. Both of them have an excellent record against top 10 players. Andreeva is currently on a five-match winning streak against Top 10 opposition, while Gauff has lost her only previous 2025 match with another Top 10 player, Jasmine Paolini, in last week's Stuttgart quarterfinals.
