Morikawa and Jakovac were an inseparable duo since the World No. 4 turned pro in 2019. They've won six PGA Tour events and two major championships together, so Knost was just as surprised as the rest of the golf world when he found out the news.
"When we first heard it, I was like, 'there's no way that this is true,'" Knost said. "This is a team that won two major championships together, have had such a great run. I mean, they seem to play good every single week."
While that's true, Morikawa hasn't won on the PGA Tour since the 2023 Zozo Championship. His most recent win before that was the 2021 Open Championship at Royal St. George's.
Morikawa ranks third on the Tour this season in total strokes gained, second in strokes gained on approach, and third in scoring average, so he's likely frustrated with his lack of hardware despite his strong play. The American figured it was time to make a change, less than three weeks away from the second major of 2025.
Greiner was likely a key factor in this decision as well. The veteran looper won six times with Homa and helped Thomas snap his three-year drought in just his second week on the bag. Free agents like that don't come along very often, so Morikawa thought it was now or never to make the switch.
Greiner will make his debut with Morikawa at the Truist Championship at Philadelphia Cricket Club on May 8. The following week, the newest player-caddie duo will take on Quail Hollow Club at their first major championship.
