Commanders Looking to Address Key Weak Point in 2025 Season
@Source: newsweek.com
Last season, the Washington Commanders found themselves one win away from reaching the Super Bowl. As they look to remain in the title hunt, the team plans to address a key area of improvement heading into the 2025 campaign.A driving catalyst in the Commanders' success was the stellar play of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. However, when it comes to things that held Washington back in 2024, run defense was at the top of the list. Their struggles in this facet were on full display in the NFC Championship game, as Saquon Barkley rushed for 118 yards and three touchdowns.During mandatory minicamp, numerous members of the Commanders opened up on their inability to defend the run in 2024. There was a clear message across the board, that it's something they're striving to improve in hopes of remaining in the hunt to compete for a title."[If] you can't stop the run, you can't win games," Washington defensive end Dorance Armstrong said. "That's why our big focus this year is to be able to stop the run a lot better than we did last year."One person who is confident that the Commanders will turn things around in this area is head coach Dan Quinn. He gushed over the versatile defensive personnel Washington has at their disposal and thinks it will yield positive results."I love the versatility of the different guys and how we're going to feature them this year in terms of sizes and strength and how we'll use some of the big guys and how we'll play them," Commanders coach Dan Quinn said. "That's the part I'm looking forward to."In 2024, the Commanders had one of the worst run defenses in the NFL. They allowed the third-most yards on the ground (2,337). Only the New Orleans Saints (2,404) and Carolina Panthers (3,057) gave up more against the rush. The Commanders' defense was also in the back half when it came to rushing touchdowns, surrendering 18.After trading for Deebo Samuel in the offseason, the Commanders have a chance to have one of the league's top offenses. However, if they're going to fulfill their championship aspirations, they'll need to hold their own on the other side of the ball too. Especially when it comes to divisional play, as Barkley is a key player they'll have to slow down.The Commanders being candid about their poor run defense is a major step towards addressing the issue. With training camp just around the corner, it is sure to remain a major point of emphasis as they ramp up for this season.
