Bermuda Cricket Bat Signed For Auction
[Written by Stephen Wright]
The cricket bat used by the Bermuda men’s under-23 football team in a spontaneous street game before the Island Games has been signed by the players and will be auctioned to raise funds for Orkney’s future athletes.
Just days before the start of the weeklong competition, which concluded on Friday [July 18], Bermuda’s players staged an impromptu match on Albert Street in Kirkwall — the largest town in Orkney.
The signed bat will now be auctioned to help fund Orkney’s athletes’ participation in the next Island Games in the Faroe Islands in 2027.
The Falkland Islands National Sports Council, whose video of the street game gained traction on social media, shared the following update online: “For those of you that saw our video clip of the Bermuda Island Games team playing cricket in the Kirkwall high street the day before Orkney 2025 kicked off … there’s been this fabulous update provided: ‘The Bermuda team signed the bat before leaving Orkney, which will now be auctioned off to raise funds to help send Orkney sportsmen and women to the Faroes Island Games in 2027.’
“That’s the spirit of the Island Games.”
The Bermuda men’s under-23 team won gold in Orkney after defeating Ynys Mon 3-1 in the final.
