Annual Taste of Cardiff The 15th annual Taste of Cardiff is from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. May 1 at restaurants and shops along San Elijo Avenue between Birmingham Drive and Chesterfield Drive, and Restaurant Row along South Coast Highway 101. The event, hosted by Cardiff 101 Main Street, features tastes of culinary creations and handcrafted beverages. Sip Stops will offer samples of local beer, wine, hard kombucha and cocktails in a can, among other drinks. Each Sip Stop will be hosted by a local business. The Rooftop Libation Lounge at the Cardiff Lodge will host dancing to live music. Tickets are $55 for taste and sip; $50 for taste only. Visit cardiff101.com. Lagoona Kahuna Cleanup Challenge The Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation will put on its Lagoona Kahuna Cleanup Challenge, presented by the Rincon Band of Luiseño Indians, from 9 a.m. to noon on May 3 at California Watersports, 4215 Harrison St. Participants compete in kayaks and paddleboards or on the shoreline to collect the most trash and remove the most weeds and invasive species. Proceeds benefit the lagoon’s award-winning environmental educational program serving 12 school districts across the county. CHULA VISTA Olaf Wieghorst Day The Olaf Wieghorst Museum will put on a celebration of Olaf Wieghorst Day from 3 to 6 p.m. April 30 to mark the Danish American artist’s birthday in 1899 and the 25th anniversary of the grand opening of the museum showing his works. Journalist to give book talk St. Peter’s Episcopal Church holds a Book Talk and Community Dinner at 6 p.m. April 30 featuring journalist Gardiner Harris, author of “No More Tears: The Dark Secrets of Johnson & Johnson.” The event will be in the Parish Hall and will include discussion and dinner catered by Beeside Balcony. Spring Fest at museum The Heritage of the Americas Museum will put on a Spring Fest with children’s activities, including face painting, cartoon theater and an alpaca visit from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 3 at 12110 Cuyamaca College Drive West as part of the Spring Garden and Butterfly Festival. Regular museum hours are from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays. Exhibits include fossilized dinosaur eggs, Charles Lindbergh’s headdress presented by the Sioux Nation after he finished his pioneering transatlantic flight, and art by local Cowboy Hall of Fame artist Olaf Wieghorst. Spring Garden and Butterfly Festival The annual Spring Garden and Butterfly Festival is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 3 at Cuyamaca College’s The Water Conservation Garden and The Heritage of the Americas Museum, 12110 Cuyamaca College Drive West. Highlights includes the Coyote Music Festival, butterfly releases, vendors, food trucks, plant sales, animals and family-friendly activities. The Cuyamaca College Nursery, a student-operated nursery, has hosted the Spring Garden Festival for over 30 years. Student interns take the lead in planting and managing a diverse selection of plants, which are sold to the public at budget-friendly prices. Admission is free. Golf tournament benefits Saddles In Service The fourth annual Charity Golf Tournament benefiting nonprofit Saddles In Service will be held May 9 at Singing Hills Golf Club at Sycuan, 3007 Dehesa Road. The veteran-founded nonprofit works to decrease suicide rates of veterans, active-duty military and first responders by supporting mental health, wellness, and healing through equine-assisted learning and activities. Salute to Young Musicians Concert A Salute to Young Musicians Concert is at 2 p.m. May 4 featuring the Coastal Communities Concert Band, an award-winning symphonic band with more than 75 San Diego-area musicians, along with 26 local high school students, at the San Dieguito Academy Gymnasium, 800 Santa Fe Drive. Students from Canyon Crest Academy, La Costa Canyon High School, San Dieguito Academy and Torrey Pines High School are slated to perform with the band, directed by guest conductor Bruce Mansfield. Assistance League holds Open House The Assistance League Inland North County holds a May Day Open House fundraiser from 4 to 7 p.m. May 1 at 2068 E. Valley Parkway. Interfaith Day of Prayer event at Grape Day Park Leaders of Escondido along with Interfaith Community Services will sponsor a National Day of Prayer event at 5 p.m. May 1 at Grape Day Park on the patio outside the Escondido City Council Chambers. Highlights include prayers and songs from many faith traditions blessing America. The event began in 1952 to pray for the nation. Attendees can can bring donations of shower shoes or money for Interfaith Community Services. Fashion show features recycled materials The Escondido Arts Partnership hosts its Recycled Material Runway event featuring upcycled fashion at 5:30 p.m. May 3 at 262 E. FLINN SPRINGS Vintage Alpine festival Vintage Alpine, a wine and food-tasting event that started in 1990, will be from 1 to 4 p.m. May 4 at Summers Past Farm, 15602 Olde Highway 80. The event features local wineries offering tastings of more than 40 wines along with samplings from area restaurants and breweries. Highlights include live music in a garden setting, a silent auction, and a chance to meet wine, food and beer specialists. The event is for ages 21 and older. Napoleonic re-enactment at farm The California Napoleonic Re-enactments group is re-creating a part of the history of Emperor Napoleon from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 3-4 at the Julian Farm and Orchard, 4381 Julian Highway. Volunteer historians and re-enactors will share living history of a small portion of Napoleon’s French Grande Army and the empire’s enemies, Britain, Austria, Prussia and their allies, on campaign in Spain. Living history interpreters will interact with the public, describing the events of the time and the life of soldiers on campaign during the early 1800s. Battles are at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The event is led by Jeffrey Hedgecock, owner of Ramona-based Historic Enterprises Inc. Admission is $10. Visit julianfarmandorchard.com. Free outdoor concert La Jolla Music Society’s free outdoor Wu Tsai QRT.yrd Concert series presents vocalist Leonard Patton at 4:30 p.m. May 2. French Film Festival The San Diego French Film Festival is May 4-7 at THE LOT La Jolla, presented by the Alliance Française San Diego. This year’s theme is “Love in All Its Forms,” which looks at emotions through a selection of French and francophone films. Community history archiving event The La Mesa History Center is collecting historical information and personal stories about La Mesa at a community archiving event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 3 at McKinney House Museum and grounds, 8369 University Ave. Participants can bring in up to 10 photographs or old flyers, posters and menus that document life in La Mesa and can sign up for a 30-minute oral history interview and a chance to tell their La Mesa story. The sale features quilts by local conservationist Diane Nygaard and artwork in many mediums by a dozen other artists. Studio Ace will provide a free Make ’n Take workshop for all ages. Movie series at library A Man Alone-A Movie Series continues at 6 p.m. May 5 featuring a screening of “Barton Fink” at the Civic Center Library Community Room, 330 N. Coast Highway. Garrett Chaffin-Quiray, author and professor of cinema studies at Palomar College, will discuss the artistic and sociological character of the film and lead an open discussion afterward. The films focus on morally conflicted characters who are fighting to recover their humanity while facing danger. Light refreshments will be provided. The series will continue June 2. Interfaith gathering for peace The Poway Interfaith Team hosts a Gathering for Prayers and Peace from 3 to 5 p.m. May 4 at St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church, 16275 Pomerado Road. The theme is “The Essence of Prayer: Insights Through Interfaith.” The event celebrates the practices of diverse faith traditions and brings the community together to focus on peace. Representatives from spiritual traditions such as Baha’i, Buddhist, Catholic, Hindu, Islam, Judaism, New Thought and Sikh will speak about how prayer is used in their tradition; what is the expectation of the one praying; to whom they pray; and for what they pray. Bernardo Gardeners Club Spring Garden Tour The Bernardo Gardeners Club runs its annual Spring Garden Tour from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. May 3 at six exceptional gardens in Rancho Bernardo and Poway. The self-guided tour includes free refreshments and vendors with handmade crafts, jewelry and plants. There will be Master Gardeners, who can answer questions. The event is open to ages 12 and older. Cinco de Mayo celebration in Old Town The Old Town San Diego Cinco de Mayo celebration is from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. May 3 and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 4 featuring folklorico dancing, cultural performances, Street Mercado with artisan vendors, handmade goods and treats along with a children’s carnival starting at noon on Harney Street with games and tattoo station. Walk for Animals benefits animal shelter The San Diego Humane Society will put on its 31st annual Walk for Animals – San Diego from 7 to 11 a.m. May 3 at NTC Park at Liberty Station, 2455 Cushing Road. Highlights include a free pancake breakfast, live music, blessing of animals, a doggie spa and Vendor Village with animal-friendly products and community partners. Proceeds will help the nonprofit care for an expected 40,000 animals in the coming year. Along with providing shelter and medical care to animals, the nonprofit helps them get adopted and rescues them from cruelty and neglect as well as providing other services. Cambodian community hosts festivities The Cambodian community is celebrating Khmer New Year and the harvest season with festivities that reflect Buddhist customs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 26-27 at Colina del Sol Park, 5295 52nd Place. Highlights include traditional Cambodian performances, live music, games and food. Maritime Museum hosts sunset sail The Maritime Museum of San Diego will host the San Salvador sunset sail experience from 5 to 7:30 p.m. May 3-4. Highlights include Spanish guitar performances, tequila cocktails and a light Mexican appetizer, aboard the San Salvador, a replica of explorer Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo’s vessel, which reached America’s West Coast in 1542. Miracles of Recovery Luncheon McAlister Institute, a nonprofit supporting addiction recovery in San Diego County, holds its 8th Annual Miracles of Recovery Luncheon at 11:15 a.m. May 20 at Coasterra on Harbor Island. The fundraising event supports McAlister Institute’s mission to break the stigma surrounding alcoholism and drug addiction, while providing resources to individuals in recovery. SAN DIEGO COUNTY Competition open to collegiate vocal groups Reser’s Fine Foods Inc., which runs a facility in San Diego County, invites collegiate vocal groups to join a competition to help create the brand’s “Good Times” jingle in celebration of its 75th anniversary. The competition is open through May 11. Registrants must be eligible to receive the winning prize in an approved nonprofit. Conservancy holds meeting on Kilimanjaro Challenge San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy holds an informational meeting at 1 p.m. May 3 at the Coastal Ranger Station on Via de la Valle at San Andres Drive to provide details for the summer 2026 Kilimanjaro Challenge, an eight-day climb to Africa’s tallest peak. Scouts hold peak-a-thon Scout Troop 709, based in Vista, will participate in its third annual peak-a-thon from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 3 at Double Peak Trail, and spectators are welcome. A peak-a-thon is similar to a jog-a-thon, with the Scouts hiking from Discovery Lake to Double Peak (1,040-foot elevation gain) up to a maximum of nine times for a total of 9,360 feet, the elevation of Mount Baden-Powell, named after the founder of the World Scouting Movement, Lord Robert Baden-Powell. The peak-a-thon will raise money for the troop’s Scouting program, which teaches a range of outdoor and first aid, citizenship and leadership skills. SANTA YSABEL Foundation gives spring art tours The Ilan-Lael Foundation will run Spring Tours from May 2 to June 14 for art lovers and architecture aficionados to explore the world of Ilan-Lael.
