Rotary Creates Magic fundraiser at arts center The 39th annual Rotary Creates Magic fundraiser is at 7 p.m. March 8 at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center on the Carlsbad High School campus, 3557 Monroe St. The show will feature a lineup of award-winning magicians who have performed around the world and appeared on television shows such as “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” and “Masters of Illusion.” The event, founded and hosted by magician Paul Dwork, The Magic of Merlin, has raised more than $1 million for various charities. Along with Dwork, who blends mystery and storytelling, the magicians performing include Ron Saylor, Jonathan Molo and Ice McDonald. Marine Corps Battle Color Detachment to perform The Army and Navy Academy hosts a performance by the United States Marine Corps Battle Color Detachment, a 115-Marine unit from Marine Barracks Washington, D.C., from 3 to 4 p.m. March 6 on Mafucci field, 2605 Carlsbad Blvd. The event features the Marine Drum & Bugle Corps, “The Commandant’s Own,” performing its renowned Music in Motion program and the Official Color Guard of the Marine Corps, “The Commandant’s Four,” presenting the National Flag and the Marine Corps Battle Color, representing every campaign in Marine Corps history. Whale migration topic of talk at lagoon The Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation will host a presentation on “The Amazing Gray Whale Migration” at 10 a.m. March 8. The talk will be led by Jane Barger, naturalist at the San Diego Natural History Museum. Barger will discuss the Eastern North Pacific gray whale, including its population, migration, calving, feeding, physical characteristics and other interesting facts. Golf tournament benefits Shelter to Soldier Shelter to Soldier will host its sixth annual “Saving Lives, One Swing at a Time” golf tournament April 25 at Singing Hills Golf Resort at Sycuan, 3007 Dehesa Road. The event, sponsored partly by Sycuan Casino Resort, supports the nonprofit’s mission of adopting dogs from local shelters and training them as service dogs for post-9/11 veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, military sexual trauma, or other service-related injuries. Registration opens at 10 a.m.; shotgun start is at noon. Tickets are $310, including boxed sandwich lunch, seltzers, beers and cocktails, along with event hats, polos, swag bags and post-tournament dinner buffet. Visit sheltertosoldier.org. ‘Music, the Brain, and Spycraft’ topic of talk A presentation on “Music, the Brain, and Spycraft” will be hosted by Del Mar-Leucadia and Carlsbad-Oceanside-Vista branches of the American Association of University Women from 10 a.m. to noon March 15 at Encinitas Community Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive. The speaker is Merryll Goldberg, who will talk about how she fuses art into other areas and how she encrypted secrets in music. Symphony performs Mid-Century Gems The North Coast Symphony Orchestra will give a concert of Mid-Century Gems at 2:30 p.m. March 8 at the San Dieguito United Methodist Church, 170 Calle Magdelena. The program of orchestral music features Vaughan Williams’ Tuba Concerto performed by Aaron McCalla, principal tubist with the San Diego Symphony. The concert also includes Sergei Prokoviev’s Symphony No. 7 and Malcolm Arnold’s “English Dances.” The orchestra was founded in 1947 and will be conducted by Jordan Kuspa. Shabbat Across America celebration Community members can celebrate Shabbat Across America and Purim with Congregation B’nai Tikvah at 6:30 p.m. March 7 on the campus of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 925 Balour Drive. Shabbat Across America is a national event sponsored by the National Jewish Outreach Program. There will be a light shabbat dinner with Purim Megillah, songs focusing on traditional Sabbath and holiday desserts. Cost is a $5 donation toward the dinner. Swing dance classes at arts center The California Center for the Arts, Escondido Foundation hosts Beginner Swing Dance Classes with Mercedes Moore on Saturdays in March (except March 22). The classes feature an introduction to six-Count Lindy (East Coast Swing). Classes are from 2 to 4 p.m. March 1, 8, 15 and 29 in Art & Education Studio 4 at the arts center, 340 N. Escondido Blvd. Each class is $20; four sessions for $60. Admission can be purchased at artcenter.org/event/beginner-swing-classes-with-mercedes-moore-4 or the CCAE box office. ‘Of Love and Light’ art show The California Center for the Arts, Escondido hosts an interactive installation, “Of Light and Love,” which includes two projects, ONENESS and Ephemeral Echoes, by Rancho Santa Fe-based multidisciplinary artist Kerry Soori McEachern. The artwork features a typographic sculpture adorned with over 1,000 origami flowers inscribed with messages of peace. Visitors can contribute their own reflections. This evolving artwork is sponsored and organized in collaboration with the nonprofit MTO Shahmaghsoudi, along with contributions from the MTO Tamarkoz App and MTO Zendeh Delan’s music. Performance of traditional Japanese folk songs A performance of traditional Japanese folk songs by internationally acclaimed Anju Madoka will be from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. March 8 at the La Jolla Riford Library, 7555 Draper Ave. The free event is co-hosted by the San Diego-Yokohama Sister City Society and the San Diego Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League. Junior League holds New Member meet and greet The Junior League of San Diego holds a New Member Information Session at 6:30 p.m. March 5 at 210 Maple St. The Junior League of San Diego, which advances women’s leadership in support of the community through volunteer action, gave $20,000 in grants to local organizations, donated more than 65,000 diapers and 42,000 feminine hygiene products to community members in need, and gave more than 1,350 volunteer hours to service projects across San Diego during its 2023-24 fiscal year. Huge rummage sale at Balboa Park The 96th annual Thursday Club Rummage Sale, billed as the area’s largest thrift, estate and garage sale, will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 8 and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 9 in the large Balboa Park Activity Center, 2145 Park Blvd. Proceeds will benefit various Balboa Park groups and local community charities and organizations supporting children, the elderly, health, veterans, arts, life skills, animals, nature and education. SAN DIEGO COUNTY Nonprofit delivers 5,000th free cake for kids in need Cake4Kids San Diego, a nonprofit that bakes cakes for birthdays and other celebrations for underserved youths who otherwise wouldn’t have one, recently reached two milestones. The nonprofit delivered its 5,000th free cake in San Diego since 2017. The group also celebrated delivery of its 500th cake to the San Diego Center for Children, which provides mental health and education services to children and families. Visit cake4kids.org/chapters/sandiego. Spring Chick Day and ‘Peep Show’ The Hawthorne Country Store in Escondido, Fallbrook and Santee hosts its annual spring Chick Day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 8. The free celebration includes more than 100 varieties of baby poultry and provides information on raising a home flock of backyard chickens. Hundreds of families typically attend each year. There will also be a Peep Show from 6 to 8 p.m. March 7 at all three locations. The $55 charge covers two adults, age 21 and older. There will be hors d’oeuvres and beverages. Special Screening of ‘The Hello Girls’ In honor of Women’s History Month, the Foundation for Women Warriors is hosting a free virtual screening of ”The Hello Girls” from 4 to 6 p.m. March 5. The documentary features rare 100-year-old film footage of America’s first female soldiers courtesy of the National Archives along with photos from family archives. The film, set in World War I, revolves around the U.S. Army Signal Corps sending 223 women to France in 1918 as telephone operators to help win the war. The women swore Army oaths, wore uniforms, held rank and were subject to military justice. By war’s end, they had connected more than 26 million calls and were recognized by Gen. John J. Pershing for their service. But when they returned home, the U.S. government told them they were never soldiers. They were finally recognized in 1977. The event raises awareness about the challenges facing caregivers of all ages who are responsible for caring for loved ones with dementia. The event started during the COVID-19 2020 lockdown with 20 participants and has grown into an international effort to promote brain health and dementia awareness. Participants pledge $1, $2 or $4 per day at registration and earn their pledge back each day they complete at least one consecutive mile. Participants can run, walk, bike or move a mile every day for 35 days to complete the challenge. Funds raised will support relief grants for dementia families. Visit moveftt.org. Antique buffs gather March 3 The El Camino Real Questers will meet at 12:30 p.m. March 3 at the Lake San Marcos conference room, 1105 La Bonita Drive. The program will be “Vera.” Questers is an international group that fosters an appreciation for antiques and collectibles, and encourages restoration of antiquities and historical sites. SOLANA BEACH Church makes sandwiches for folks in need Volunteers recently gathered at Calvary Lutheran Church to make sack lunches for those in need in North County. The group made more than 500 sandwiches in one hour, and added fruit, granola bars, nuts and water to the lunch sacks. The lunches were delivered to Interfaith Community Services in Escondido for distribution. VALLEY CENTER Jazz benefit concert A lunch fundraiser and concert featuring jazz, swing and big band music will be at noon March 2 in the Maxine Theater at Valley Center High School, 31322 Cole Grade Road. The benefit features the award-winning Valley Center Middle and High School jazz bands directed by Jeff Beck. The nonprofit Valley Center/Pauma Music Boosters will be cooking lunch starting at noon with hot dogs, toppings and a bake sale. The concert begins at 1 p.m. This event is a key fundraiser for the music programs, which are supported by the booster volunteer organization. Civitan event benefits community members with disabilities The Route 78 Civitan will hold its Walk & Roll event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 29 to raise money for monthly dances for community members with neurodevelopmental, intellectual and developmental disorders. The event will be held at Guajome Park Academy, 2000 N. Santa Fe Ave. Sponsorships are sought; email screenbiz@yahoo.com. If your nonprofit would like to submit an event listing or photos of events that have happened recently, please email linda.mcintosh@sduniontribune.com. Include the name of the group, date and time of event, address, cost and contact information for readers within the email text. Event listings should be submitted at least two weeks in advance. Photos should be sent as JPEGs. Include the names of those in the photos from left to right along with the photo credit and permission from the photographer to use the photo in The San Diego Union-Tribune.
