Six people were killed when a small private plane crashed in upstate New York Friday, including two Weston High School graduates, a former Boston neurosurgeon, and a urogynecologist based in Wellesley.
Four of the people fatally injured were members of the close-knit Groff family who were traveling to the Catskills for a birthday celebration and the Passover holiday, the Associated Press reported.
Neuroscientist Dr. Michael Groff, urogynecologist Dr. Joy Saini, Jared Groff, a 2022 graduate of Swarthmore College who worked as a paralegal, and Karenna Groff, a former MIT soccer player named the 2022 NCAA woman of the year, were all fatally injured.
Alexia Couyutas Duarte, Jared Groff’s partner who also graduated from Swarthmore and planned to attend Harvard Law School this fall, and Karenna Groff’s boyfriend, James Santoro, another recent MIT graduate, also died in the plane crash, according to a family statement Sunday.
The crash is still under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.
‘A current student at Weston High School, was not on the plane and remains with us’
Jared Groff and Karenna Groff graduated from Weston High School in 2017 and 2018, respectively, according to a statement released by Weston Superintendent Karen Zaleski.
“Their lives ended far too soon,” a statement from Weston Public Schools said. “One family member, a current student at Weston High School, was not on the plane and remains with us. We are holding her and her extended family and friends in our thoughts and are committed to supporting her in the days ahead.”
Anika Groff, a Weston High School soccer player, is set to graduate from high school this year, The Boston Globe reported.
“Out of respect for the family and especially for our student who is grieving the loss of her loved ones, we ask that all members of our community honor their privacy during this deeply personal time,” Zaleski wrote. “Our role as a school community is to surround them with quiet care, compassion, and space to heal.”
Counseling services will be available for any Weston students affected by the losses.
Swarthmore College’s President Val Smith said in a statement that Anika Groff was recently admitted to Swarthmore’s Class of 2029, where her brother played on the basketball team and Couyutas Duarte graduated.
“In the face of such devastating news, we recognize and celebrate all that these extraordinary individuals meant to us, as well as support those who knew, mentored, and loved them,” Smith wrote in a note to community members.
‘We play for Karenna’: MIT’s soccer team, lacrosse teams react
MIT’s women’s soccer team reacted to Karenna Groff’s death on Instagram Monday evening.
“More than all of the impressive accolades that Karenna accomplished, we will remember her as a sister, a teammate, a daughter, and the best of friends,” the team’s page said. “She was always a smiling face both on and off the field, making each and every person she came across feel special and loved. An inspiration and role model to us all, we play for Karenna.”
Martin Desmarais, the head coach, said in a statement that Karenna Groff was “the best example of a true MIT student-athlete – successful on the field, successful in the classroom and a beloved teammate.”“Her parents, Michael and Joy, also had a big impact on MIT Women’s Soccer during Karenna’s time on the team,” Desmarais said. “They hosted the team every preseason for a pool party and cookout at their house and helped with other activities around games during the season. With a team full of players from all over the country, they were often one of the few local parents that could easily be at games and their presence meant a lot to the team.”
Tyler O’Keefe, the head coach of the MIT men’s lacrosse team, echoed condolences after the loss of James Santoro, who played on the team. “I share my deepest condolences to the Santoro and Groff families, friends and all those affected by this loss, including the MIT men’s lacrosse community and the MIT women’s soccer community,” O’Keefe said in a statement.
James Santoro’s father told Boston 25 News that the couple were planning to get engaged this summer.
“Still couldn’t believe it was true. I still don’t believe it’s true,” John Santoro told the news station. “Karenna was a fantastic person, and after you met her parents, it became pretty clear where she got it from.”
Michael Groff was leading neurosurgeon in Boston before move to Rochester
Michael Groff was most recently the executive medical director of neurosciences at Rochester Regional Health in New York. He was previously employed at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and as an associate professor of neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School. His wife, Saini, worked at a private medical practice, according to its website.
“Dr. Groff was a brilliant neurosurgeon, leader, and mentor who brought compassion, vision, and excellence to everything he did,” Rochester Regional said in a statement. “Though his time with us was short, his impact was profound and lasting.”
Dr. E. Antonio Chiocca, the chair of the neurosurgery department at Mass General Brigham, told the Globe that Michael Groff was the vice chair of the neurosurgery department at MGB from 2011 until last summer, when he took the job at Rochester Regional Health.
“We are heartbroken,” Chiocca said. “Just a really, really nice guy, a great family man … Just really a loss for all of us. It’s tragic.”
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, Michael Groff had held a commercial pilots license since 2010, while Karenna and Jared Groff were issued a student pilot license in 2015 and were prohibited from carrying passengers.
Saini’s practice, MIT, and Harvard Medical School did not return a request for comment.
