Sue Cleaver has been heard opening up about her decision to leave Coronation Street after 25 years. The actress is famed for playing Eileen Grimshaw in the ITV soap. But Sue confirmed back in January that she'd be soon bowing out of the programme, with her character set to wave goodbye to Weatherfield, however, the door will be left open for a potential return in the future. She said in a statement: “I’ve had 25 privileged years of working on Coronation Street. The door is still firmly open, but as I reached my 60th year I decided it was time to embrace change, look for new adventures and live fearlessly." Sue later said it was the "right time" and revealed hoe she actually decided to quit over two years ago and told some of her I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here campmates, including Loose Women star Charlene White, of her decision back in 2022. Appearing on This Morning on Thursday (March 13), Sue spoke about her exit after being asked why she was leaving by hosts Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley. "I'm leaving now - I'm 61 and this is what my new book is all about. I think we get to an age where society wants us just to shuffle off quietly and I really want to encourage other women that we have so much more to give," she said. "We have experience, we make great mentors, we make great resolution makers, we're great teachers - we have so much life experience. I think a lot of women lose their confidence and their belief in themselves. I think we spend too much time looking after other people and we haven't spent enough time prioritising ourselves." Sue added that she has struggled with "negative" thoughts throughout her life. "I hope to help people realise that you don't have to listen to those thoughts, they're just background noise," she said. She later said: "I was listening to my own self-criticism. I thought, 'I'm not good enough, I'm an imposter, I'm going to get found out, I'm a horrible person.' Then I realised that thoughts come and go. We take our thoughts as fact and they're not. "We get wrapped up with the thoughts, the problems, the what ifs. Anxiety, which is a big one of mine, is always future based. It's always about 'could this happen?' It's our imaginings and as we know, that's not real." Earlier in the interview, Sue reflected on some of her time in the long-running show. As one of the clips showed Eileen slapping her son Jason twice after revealing his engagement to Sarah Platt, Sue commented: "How the world has changed. "In the early days when you slapped somebody, you used to do it. Now, you have stunt people in and it's all magic but we used to actually do it." She then recalled a scene with Simon Gregson and Craig Charles as she confessed: "I remember banging Steve McDonald and Craig's (Lloyd) head together, and there was an almighty bang." Sue added: "Honestly, I nearly killed them... I got carried away. Not big, don't try at home..."
