Malawi National Council of Sports and Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) have signed a strategic partnership that will see the public broadcaster providing comprehensive, equal and extensive coverage of various sports disciplines.
During the signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Thursday in Blantyre, Sports Council chief executive officer Henry Kamata said the deal will create enough space for the public to know more about activities and stories of unsung heroes of all sports codes.
“We have 43 registered sports associations in the country, but it is the activities of less than 10 disciplines that are well known by the public,” said Kamata, who was accompanied by the council’s finance director Shephord Boma.
“There are also a lot of hidden talents in disciplines such as cricket, handball and basketball that need to be brought to the fore through live broadcasts, in-depth analyses and profiles.”
MBC director of engineering Aidan Gumeni, in the company of director of programmes Kate Kujaliwa, said they believe the partnership will also be a catalyst for attracting sponsorships and advertising through their television, radio and online channels.
“We believe the programming will be inspiring upcoming athletes and generating support for sports associations,” he said.
“It will be showcasing the skills of sporting talents that Malawi has.”
