Country star Luke Combs has opened up about his struggles with obsessional obsessive-compulsive disorder, otherwise known as “Pure O,” in an interview with “60 Minutes Australia.” The singer/songwriter has been struggling with the form of OCD since he was 12 years old and has described it as “particularly wicked.” Combs, 35, explained how he dealt with one of his worst flare-ups during his tour stops in Australia in January. It was one of his worst experiences in years, resulting in obsessive thoughts consuming him for “45 seconds of every minute for weeks.” “There’s no outward manifestation of it, right? Like you’re talking about the flicking of a light switch, but for me, it’s all going on here,” Combs added. “When someone else flicks a light switch, you can see it happening. But for someone like myself, you wouldn’t even know what’s going on—it could be happening right now, and you wouldn’t even realize it.” Combs also spoke about how the disorder has affected his life. “It held me back so many times in my life where you’re trying to accomplish something, you’re doing really great, and then you have a flare-up, and it just like ruins your whole life for six months,” said the singer. With time, Combs has learned how to manage disorder and aspires to help others. “When it happens now, I’m not afraid of it because I’m not like, ‘What if I’m like this forever?’ I know I’m not going to be like this forever now.” Related coverage: FIFA World Cup final in N.J. to feature 1st-ever halftime show.
