Couple Head Out for Date Night, Unprepared for What They Bring Home
@Source: newsweek.com
While out on a date, a couple came across a street cat who immediately befriended them. Of course, they changed their plans for the night and just went home with her.A viral TikTok video shared on Sunday under the username @meow.menacehouse shows the small tabby cat, now known as Ivy, approaching the poster in the streets, following her around and head-butting her, like she's trying to win her over."One date night months ago we found this kitten on the street. She was so affectionate and hungry. She was catching bugs to eat. We ended up changing our plans and taking her home. She was so happy and sweet," she writes in the clip.After taking her to the veterinarian and getting her "fixed and healthy," she introduced the kitty to her two house cats, named Sammy and Mimi, who also fell for their new little sister immediately."We weren't planning on keeping her at first. We already had two cats. But we couldn't help but fall for her. And we weren't the only ones. Our cat Mimi found her new best friend. Even our eldest didn't mind her company. From a distance at least. She's still as feral as ever, but happy to be home," she said.Of the 6.3 million homeless animals that enter American shelters every year, 3.2 million are cats. Of them, only about 2.1 million are adopted. While some are returned to their original owners, about 530,000 of them are euthanized.That's why adopting cats is more important now than it's ever been. Getting your fur-baby from a shelter not only saves their life, but it also frees up space in our already overwhelmed shelters across the country.While some cats prefer being alone, many will adapt to a new cat in the house, as long as they are introduced the right way.British animal charity International Cat Care explains that the best way to introduce felines is following a five step method which starts with scent swapping, allowing each cat to familiarize with the other feline's smell before a face to face meeting.Next, you can allow exploration of each cat's area, before proceeding to visual contact, and once they've actually seen the other cat in the house, you can allow supervised physical interaction.When the cats are comfortable enough, you can encourage short periods of free access without supervision, while still keeping an eye on them in case you need to intervene.The video quickly went viral on social media and it has so far received over 120,800 views and 33,600 likes on the platform.One user, Jessi Jess, commented: "The way she RAN to you. She knew she found her home."Advance Gryphon said: "Dangling from the curtains."Ebbings added: "She is so cute sweet and fluffy!!! She found you."Newsweek reached out to @meow.menacehouse for comment via TikTok comments.
