Couple's Disastrous Realization Night Before Family Vacation: 'Divorce'
@Source: newsweek.com
A video about a couple's vacation that nearly came to a screeching halt following a crucial discovery made the night before their departure has gone viral on TikTok.The clip, posted by Cassie (@cassiesage), a creative director at Yahoo, has been viewed more than 4.5 million times since it was shared on May 14.The video chronicles the moment her husband, Matt, who works in commercial real estate, revealed he couldn't find his passport—just hours before their 6 a.m. flight to Mexico with their children."'They are always in the safe,' he promised. But, this time, they were not," Cassie, who did not share her age, last name or location, told Newsweek.International family travel is booming again. The 2023 U.S. Family Travel Survey by the Family Travel Association, in collaboration with NYU's Tisch Center of Hospitality and Edinburgh Napier University, found that 81 percent of U.S. parents planned to travel with their children in 2024.The study, based on responses from more than 3,300 parents and grandparents, found large family groups—including multigenerational travelers—were driving the surge, with over half of parents planning trips with grandparents and children.The family in the viral video had spent weeks preparing for their vacation to Mayakoba, Mexico, with a significant portion of that time dedicated to rushing passport applications for their children."The trip had been planned for two months, during which we were frantically consumed with getting our kids new passports in time," Cassie told Newsweek. "They arrived just days before the trip, so we were relieved. All was good."All was not good for long. At 8 p.m. on the night before departure, Matt made the stunning revelation. "After $$ and weeks of passport agency visits to expedite the kids' passport, he just told me he can't find his," reads the overlaid text on Cassie's video. "My husband and I are supposed to be taking our kids to Mexico at 6 a.m. tomorrow. We've taken PTO [paid time off] and have been looking forward to this trip for months."Cassie's clip asks viewers to choose how to respond: "Are you a) being supportive b) looking up divorce lawyers c) going without him." In the caption, she answered: "Somewhere between B and C at the moment."Cassie's fears weren't just about travel logistics. "We recently moved across the country so my first concern was that his passport was still residing somewhere on the West Coast," she said. "He stayed incredibly calm while I was absolutely panicking—and between us, I was already texting friends to see if anyone wanted to use his ticket."In a decision that split the family, Cassie and their kids went ahead with the flight while Matt stayed behind. "The kids were too excited about the trip; there was no way I was leaving them behind," she said. She also revealed the trip doubled as their "babymoon" before welcoming a third child."The kids and I ended up making the flight to Mexico without him; he stayed confident that it would turn up," Cassie noted.Despite the stressful start, the family reunited under the Mexican sun, as the passport had been closer than expected. "Turns out it was in his golf bag in the garage all along … and he was able to join us the next day. Let's just say he did not bring his golf clubs on the trip," Cassie said.Do you have a travel-related video or story to share?
