Cricket fans demand overhaul of selection panel

Guest Writer ENOUGH is enough! That is the message from the Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) fans, who have had enough with the David Mutendera led selection panel, accusing them of bias, racism and nepotism. A wave of outrage is sweeping across the restive but passionate cricket community, as fans have launched an online petition demanding the immediate dismissal of the national team selectors. The cricket fans believe they have had enough of seeing talent overlooked in favour of “favoured names” and under-performing regulars. Today, the Chevrons are scheduled to face New Zealand in their second match of the T20I Tri-Series. The team is without the two best performing players in the domestic T20 competition. Tadiwanashe Marumani, who topped the batting charts in the domestic T20 with 266 runs at an average of 53.20 failed to make the team. Bradley Evans, who topped the bowling charts with 15 wickets, at a breath-taking average of 7.13 also failed to make the team. How is that possible? No explanation whatsoever was given. But, if the best performing players are continually overlooked, no one can blame hordes of followers for demanding answers. The same happened in the Test squad that was humiliated by South Africa at Queens Sports Club recently and the same has been happening for a long time. The stench of nepotism and club bias, especially favouritism towards Takashinga players, is killing the game, cricket followers painfully observe. Selections appear to have more to do with who you know than how many runs or wickets you have. Zimbabwe Cricket is not a private club! As such, fans have started an online petition calling for Mutendera and his cabal to step down from the office. The petition, put last Friday after Queens humiliation by one cricket fan, Tatenda Jokonya, had gotten 1 231 signatures on Wednesday. “As a passionate supporter of Zimbabwe Cricket, witnessing the decline of our national team due to repeated poor performances is truly heart-wrenching. The core issue, as numerous fans and analysts have pointed out, lies in the inconsistent and often questionable team selections made by the selection committee. Instead of building a formidable team, the committee continuously opts for decisions that have not been justified by performance statistics or player potential. “Zimbabwe, a nation with a rich cricketing history, has produced some remarkable players over the years. However, recent selections have overlooked young, promising talents, who could bring vitality and success to the team. It is not only affecting the team’s performance on an international level but also dampening the spirit of aspiring cricketers in our country. Potential stars are left on the sidelines, while the same players are chosen despite their lack of form or fitness. “Addressing this issue is pivotal. We urge the reinstatement of a more transparent, performance-based selection approach. The criteria should be clear: select players on merit, emphasising recent form, fitness standards, and a balanced combination of experience and youth,” wrote Jokonya. He added: “The cricket fraternity in Zimbabwe, fans, and players alike, deserve a selection committee that resonates with our collective aspirations. By signing this petition, you voice your support for a reformed system that prioritises the future of Zimbabwe Cricket and restores its glory. Let’s unite to ensure our cricket heritage is preserved and our potential maximised. Please sign and share this petition to demand concrete action.” Pressure is mounting, fans, who are part of the key stakeholders, demand answers. The message from the stands is loud and clear: enough is enough. The fans want change. Mutendera, whose playing stats are forgettable at best, cannot keep failing upward.
