Cricket fans will bid farewell to the Gabba after it was confirmed that the iconic Ashes venue is to be demolished. Australian officials have announced that the 130-year-old Brisbane venue will be knocked down following the 2032 Olympic Games in the city. A new 63,000-seater stadium is to be built in the Victoria Park area of Brisbane as its replacement. New houses will be built on the site of the historic Gabba which has staged 67 men's Test matches and two women's down the years as well as hosting Aussie rules. Most recently, it was the venue for a day-night Test as Australia faced India during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in December. The stadium was often used to open the Australian men's summer, although the 2025-26 Ashes series will instead begin in Perth . The Gabba will host the second Test, another day-night contest, before further matches between England and Australia in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. England fans might be relieved given their woeful record at the Gabba; losing seven of their last nine games in Brisbane, including a humiliating nine-wicket defeat in 2021, and last winning there in 1986. But a portion of cricket purists have been left gutted by the news. "Such a shame to see that yet another historic ground is going to make way for another soulless stadium," one fan posted on social media. "The game is going to lose one of its most famous venues," another bemoaned. A third said: "Well done Australia, keep demolishing all your history." But not everyone is sad to see it go. Areas of the stadium have become outdated in recent years, with part of its roof failing in 2008. According to Fox Sports , degradation has been identified in steel structures while the ground's lifts and ventilation are subpar. An ambulance can't even get onto the Gabba field if required. "It's the most rundown stadium I've ever attended. Good," a less sentimental fan commented. "It's a s*** stadium from a spectators POV, so I think it's about time," another concluded. "It's a crap stadium. Not fan friendly. Out of date," an Aussie added. Is it time for The Gabba to be demolished? Have us your say in the comments section . There's no timeline on when the Gabba will host its last match, with the Olympic final mooted as a possibility by Queensland Premier David Crisafulli. "Wouldn't it be amazing to see the Australian cricket team win gold at an Olympic final? The Gabba's swansong," Crisafulli remarked. "The Gabba is at its end of life. It hasn't been well maintained, and we do need a stadium to host this great show, and there is an opportunity for legacy play." Cricket Australia said in a statement: "We are absolutely delighted Brisbane will have a stadium that will provide a brilliant showcase for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and a world class home for sports and other major events for decades to come. "This decision gives us certainty about venues and scheduling which in turn allows us to ensure Brisbane hosts the very best possible international and domestic cricket. "We strongly advocated building a stadium in Victoria Park together with Queensland Cricket, the AFL and Brisbane Lions, and cricket will play a major role in ensuring this significant investment delivers long-term benefits for cricket fans and the people of Queensland. "On behalf of the cricket community we want to thank the Queensland Government for seizing this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to give the fans, the city and the state the stadium they deserve."
