Cristiano Ronaldo has already voiced his concerns about Old Trafford. The Manchester United legend's explosive thoughts on the club's infrastructure raised eyebrows, back in 2022, but his concerns have since been vindicated. On Tuesday, United announced its plans to build a new 100,000-seater stadium as part of a wider regeneration of the Old Trafford area. The club have claimed the project will significantly boost the UK economy, create thousands of jobs and build 17,000 homes. The development would breathe new life into United , who have fallen behind many of their Premier League rivals since Ronaldo left to join Real Madrid in 2009. The now-Al-Nassr striker completed a then-world record transfer to Los Blancos before signing for Juventus in 2018. Ronaldo later returned to United and, to his surprise, little had changed in the 12 years he had been away. The Portugal international noticed the club's swimming pool, gym and other infrastructure had not been upgraded since when he first joined. Speaking with Piers Morgan, during that bombshell chat, Ronaldo said: "Nothing changed since I left, the pool, the jacuzzi, even the gym, even some technology. Even the chefs who I appreciate, lovely people. I thought I would see new technology, infrastructure. I saw things I saw when I was 20!" At the time, five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo was heavily scrutinised for voicing his concerns and his contract was later mutually terminated. The iconic striker's comments have been brought to life numerous times since, with leaks in the roof often spotted at Old Trafford. Now, United finally look set to take action, with Ineos founder Sir Jim Ratcliffe heeding Ronaldo's main concerns. Speaking to club media, the British billionaire and co-owner outlined his ambitions: "Today marks the start of an incredibly exciting journey to the delivery of what will be the world's greatest football stadium, at the centre of a regenerated Old Trafford. "Our current stadium has served us brilliantly for these past 115 years, but that has fallen behind the best arenas in world sport. By building next to the existing site, we will be able to preserve the essence of Old Trafford, while creating a truly state-of-the-art stadium that transforms the fan experience, only footsteps from our historic home. "Just as important is the opportunity for a new stadium to be the catalyst for social and economic renewal of the Old Trafford area, creating jobs and investment, not just during the construction phase, but on a lasting basis when the stadium district is complete. "The Government has identified infrastructure investment as a strategic priority, particularly in the north of England, and we are proud to be supporting that mission with this project of national, as well as local, significance."
