Asian champions Al Ahli clinched the Saudi Super Cup title after edging past Al Nassr 5-3 on penalties at the Hong Kong Stadium on Friday. Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy emerged as the hero, saving Abdullah Al-Khaibari’s spot kick, while all of Ahli’s takers converted to secure the club’s second Super Cup triumph - their first since 2016. In regular time, Cristiano Ronaldo made history by giving Al Nassr the lead with his 100th goal for the club. However, Franck Kessie equalised for Al Ahli from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time. The two teams were level at 2-2 after 90 minutes, before Al Ahli prevailed 5-3 in the shootout. Marcelo Brozovic restored Nassr’s advantage in the second half, but Roger Ibanez struck late to force the final into penalties. Ronaldo first player ever to score 100 goals for four clubs Ronaldo became the first player ever to score 100 or more goals for four separate clubs, having netted 450 times for Real Madrid, 145 for Manchester United, and 101 for Juventus. He is also the all-time leading international goalscorer with 138 goals for Portugal. After struggling in the opening stages, Al Nassr began to grow into the game but were unable to break through until Ronaldo struck in the 40th minute. Ali Majrashi handled a cross from Ayman Yahya, and Ronaldo stepped up to fire the spot kick straight down the middle. Al Ahli drew level in first-half stoppage time when Enzo Millot found Franck Kessie in space on the edge of the box. The Ivorian curled a shot into the far corner for his third goal of the Super Cup. Al Ahli maintained the tempo and should have gone ahead with 20 minutes remaining, but Firas Al-Buraikan somehow fired an Ivan Toney cross against the post from inside the six-yard box. With seven minutes left in regulation time, Brozovic put Al Nassr ahead again after dispossessing Kessie in the area before calmly slotting into the bottom corner. But with only a minute left, Brazilian defender Ibanez headed home from a corner to take the contest to penalties. Although Ronaldo converted his spot kick in the shootout, teammate Al-Khaibari’s miss proved costly, as Al Ahli sealed a 5-3 victory to lift the trophy for the first time since 2016.
