Chennai Super Kings CSK head coach Stephen Fleming has dismissed speculation regarding MS Dhonis retirement asserting that the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman remains an integral part of the team. Flemings remarks came after CSKs 25-run defeat to Delhi Capitals in Match 17 of the Indian Premier League IPL 2025 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
CSKs Struggles Continue
This loss marked CSKs third consecutive defeat in the 18th edition of the IPL as the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side failed to chase down a target of 184 set by Axar Patels Delhi Capitals. The teams performance has raised concerns among fans and analysts alike prompting questions about potential changes within the squad.
Retirement Rumors Intensify
Speculation about Dhonis possible retirement intensified after his parents were spotted at the MA Chidambaram Stadium during the match. Observers interpreted their presence as a potential indication of an impending announcement from the 43-year-old cricketer.

Flemings Clarification
Addressing the rumors during the post-match press conference Fleming stated quotNo thats not my role to put an end to it. I have no idea. Im just enjoying working with him still. Hes still going strong. I dont even ask these days. You are the ones who ask.quot This statement underscores Dhonis ongoing commitment to the team and suggests that retirement is not currently under consideration.

However CSK took to X and posted a meme with the caption quotno context.quot While the caption may have seemed cryptic to some those familiar with the teams meme culture immediately understood the underlying message.
Dhonis On-field Performance
In the match against Delhi Capitals Dhoni remained unbeaten with a score of 30 off 26 balls including one four and one six. However his innings lacked the aggressive intent typically associated with his batting especially as the required run rate climbed above 15 runs per over. Despite an unbroken sixth-wicket partnership of 84 runs with Vijay Shankar who scored 69 off 54 balls CSK fell short of the target resulting in a defeat.
After registering just a single win in 4 games Chennai Super Kings will face Punjab Kings in their next match at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium Mullanpur Chandigarh on April 8.
