Curtis Jones' chilling three-word message to Abdoulaye Doucoure as Liverpool and Everton brawled
@Source: mirror.co.uk
Liverpool's Curtis Jones aimed an expletive-laden threat at Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure after their Merseyside derby brawl, according to a professional lip reader. The dramatic final clash between the two fierce rivals at Goodison Park concluded with James Tarkowski snatching a late equaliser for the Toffees, igniting chaos among fans and players alike. Post-match tensions rose when Doucoure celebrated in front of the visiting Reds supporters, provoking a reaction from Jones, who brawled with the 32-year-old before the pair and other stars were separated. After the altercation, both players were shown second yellows, and referee Michael Oliver dismissed Arne Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff for their response towards him. Before receiving his marching orders, Jones was seen pointing at the player he had just clashed with. Professional lip reader Jeremy Freeman told the Liverpool Echo that midfielder Jones hurled an insult at Doucoure post-separation, saying: "Hey, you're f***ed." Following this, Jones was shown a second yellow by referee Oliver and was escorted away by assistant coach and ex-Everton defender John Heitinga, who then told him: "Calm... shh... stay calm." In response, Jones is said to have retorted: "Hey, that's s**t." The clash cast a shadow over the final showdown at Everton's long-standing home before their relocation to Bramley-Moore Dock for the 2025/26 season. David Moyes' squad took an early lead just 10 minutes in, with Beto finding the net from a swift free-kick. However, the advantage was short-lived as Alexis Mac Allister's header levelled the score five minutes later. Liverpool regained control with a little over 15 minutes to go when a blocked shot from Jones rebounded to Mohamed Salah, who scored from close quarters. As the match neared its end, it seemed the league frontrunners would further their lead with all three points. But Tarkowski had a different script, connecting with a ball at the back post and driving it into the roof of Alisson's goal. The tensions then boiled over post-match, likely leading to fines for both clubs, according to ex-PGMOL chief Keith Hackett. "Both teams will be charged with failing to control their players," Hackett told Football Insider. "Curtis Jones, clearly upset, decided to get involved, and he finished up with a second yellow followed by red. "With the game over, the Liverpool manager approached Oliver, and a conversation resulted in Slot getting a straight red card. A terrific game [was] marred by a loss of discipline by several players caught up in the passion of a Merseyside derby." Doucoure has been the subject of racist abuse on social media in the aftermath of the drama on Wednesday evening. Liverpool have since released a statement condemning such behaviour, with an investigation to be carried out. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
