Damning Man United statistic about Rasmus Hojlund after Nottingham Forest defeat speaks volumes
@Source: manchestereveningnews.co.uk
The self-described home of Expected Goals has clarified that a damning statistic comparing Harry Maguire and Rasmus Hojlund after Manchester United lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest on 1 April was "not even an April Fools". Playing on April Fool's Day for the first time since a 0-0 draw with West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford in 2017, United again failed to score against opposition from the other side of the Midlands. On that previous occasion, then-manager Jose Mourinho had Anthony Martial starting up front. Eight years later, Hojlund is increasingly becoming as maligned under Ruben Amorim as Martial once was. The xG Philosophy epitomised that feeling when posting about the Expected Goals data from Tuesday night. Their xG model had Forest recording a total of 0.61, with United having 2.27. Adding context to those numbers, they claimed that "Harry Maguire accumulated more xG in added time against Nottingham Forest than Rasmus Hojlund has in his last 15 appearances". That run would stretch back to the 3-1 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion in January on the assumption it includes only United matches across all competitions. Maguire had three attempts within the goal area against Forest. He first headed wide from a Patrick Dorgu cross in the 92nd minute after being moved up front alongside Hojlund. The defender then had two shots in quick succession blocked after getting onto the end of a Noussair Mazraoui ball into the box. Nicolas Dominguez blocked the first effort from point-blank range before the second strike made it past the dive of goalkeeper Matz Sels only for Murillo to clear it off the line. Hojlund, meanwhile, managed just one attempt, which was barely a minute into the second half. That was his 17th shot across the last 15 matches for United, just four of which were on target.
