South Australia’s Barossa Valley, Victoria’s Yarra Valley and Western Australia’s Margaret River were the most successful Aussie wine regions on Wednesday night at the bottle shop’s 2025 Best in Glass Wine Awards in Melbourne. One of the wines crowned the best in its category is just $20.29 a bottle. That is the pinot gris from Tim Adams Wines, a family-owned and operated winery in South Australia’s Clare Valley. The best riesling costs not much more at $24.29 a bottle from Rieslingfreak in the same valley. South Australia was the most successful state in the awards, taking home 13 wins. The best shiraz (Langmeil Valley Floor Shiraz) and the best grenache (Teusner Joshua Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre) both come from the Barossa Valley. Victoria’s wine regions won eight awards, Western Australia had four winners all from Margaret River and Tasmania dominated the sparkling category. In addition to naming the best wines, Dan Murphy’s also named the best value wine for each category. The most affordable winners were the Fifth Leg Semillon Sauvignon Blanc ($13.29) from Margaret River and Shingleback Red Knot Shiraz ($12.99) from McLaren Vale. Dan Murphy’s said its wine merchants tasted more than 700 wines and then a shortlist were retasted across state-based panels. Andrew Shedden, Dan Murphy’s general manager of premium and luxury, said there was fierce competition but unlike wine awards that focus on more technical detail, these awards aimed to help more everyday wine drinkers. “The result is a line-up of Aussie favourites and international gems that cover just about every drinking occasion you can think of, from steak night to date night,” he said. Mr Shedden said the judging panel was “impressed by cool climate styles like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sparkling”. “They also highlighted the unbelievable value that traditional reds like Shiraz and Cabernet are providing,” he added.
