The Delhi-NCR landscape is on the brink of a major transformation. The daily traffic congestion experienced during peak hours may soon become a thing of the past. Vehicles that currently inch along congested roads are expected to move swiftly, thanks to the construction of four new highways and tunnels across the region.
These projects will not only shorten distances between Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, and Faridabad but also reduce travel times from hours to mere minutes. To accelerate travel across the Delhi-NCR region, the Ministry of Road Transport, the Governments of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) are working at an unprecedented pace. These developments promise commuters smoother, traffic-free journeys in the near future.
The first major project is an elevated expressway from Delhi’s Dhaula Kuan to Manesar, aimed at easing congestion on the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway. The final plan is expected to be approved in the coming months following discussions between Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and Union Minister Rao Indrajit Singh.
The second project involves a five-kilometre tunnel to alleviate traffic between Dwarka and Vasant Kunj. This signal-free tunnel will run underground from the Shiv Murti area of Mahipalpur (Dwarka Expressway) to Nelson Mandela Road (Vasant Kunj). According to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the NHAI will undertake its construction at an estimated cost of Rs 3,500 crore. Approved by Union Minister Gadkari, the tunnel will feature six lanes and support high-speed travel.
The third project seeks to connect Yamuna Embankment Road (Pushta Road) to National Highway-9 (NH-9), improving connectivity to the upcoming Noida International Airport. Once clearance is received from the Noida Authority and Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Department, the NHAI will begin work. The project may take the form of either an eight-lane ground-level expressway or a six-lane elevated road, running parallel to the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway along the Yamuna embankment. It is expected to benefit approximately one million residents.
The fourth development is Urban Extension Road-2, recently inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Dubbed Delhi’s third ring road, this 75 km, six-lane highway will drastically reduce intra-city travel time while improving regional connectivity with Punjab, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, and Uttarakhand.
These infrastructure projects are set to redefine travel across Delhi-NCR, offering faster, safer, and more efficient transport for millions in the years to come.
