Dellavedova signs with the Kings in major coup for NBL heavyweights

The Sydney Kings have taken a huge leap to regaining NBL heavyweight status by signing NBA champion Matthew Dellavedova on a three-year deal. Recently crowned MVP of the NBL championship series, Dellavedova left Melbourne United after two seasons to join the Kings, shunning interest from the Brisbane Bullets and Perth Wildcats. The contract is the NBL's most significant since the free agency period officially began on April 4. Dellavedova is one of the NBL's only out-and-out point guards and is highly-regarded for his defensive grit and on-court effort. The 34-year-old country Victoria product joins a Kings roster smarting from its sudden-death loss in last year's play-in tournament in Brian Goorjian's first season back at the helm. He lines up alongside the likes of Xavier Cooks, Shaun Bruce and Bul Kuol on the roster for the upcoming campaign, set to tip off in September. "It's going to be a fun and exciting next chapter for me, and being the competitor I am, I'll do everything I can to make it a successful one," Dellavedova said. Dellavedova was a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers team that won the 2016 NBA championship alongside LeBron James and a bronze medallist with the Boomers at the Tokyo Olympics. The Kings now turn their attention to the remainder of their roster, with a centre looming as a high priority for Goorjian's second season at the helm. The club must also make a decision on the future of free agent role player Makuach Maluach and whether or not to make a play at re-signing imports Cam Oliver and Jaylen Adams.
