Derek McInnes blasts Rangers decision as Kilmarnock boss insists key corner call proved costly

Derek McInnes reckons bad decisions and bad defending left Kilmarnock with nothing. The Rugby Park boss was gutted after his team lost a 2-0 lead to be sunk by Rangers . McInnes’ men started superbly and could have scored more inside the opening 30 minutes than the two goals supplied by Joe Wright and Brad Lyons. However, after Vaclav Cerny had halved his side’s lead before the interval, the gaffer was disappointed that referee Don Robertson awarded a corner kick from which the visitors levelled at the start of the second-half. The official initially appeared to signal for a goal-kick after an Ianis Hagi shot drifted, but seemed to change his mind on the advice of assistant Ross Macleod. McInnes was also unhappy at the defending from the subsequent James Tavernier delivery as Cyriel Dessers scored and also more moments in the backline which proved costly. He said: “I don’t think we reacted well at 2-2. Rangers sniffed blood. We have to learn from that, but we gave it a go. Some bad decisions and defending allowed us to come away with nothing. “The second goal was a free header in the six yard box. We blocked ourselves and got ourselves in a state. That said, it's not a corner. Don Robertson has given the goal kick and allowed the linesman 30 yards away to give a corner. "There’s no touch, but we still need to defend the corner. That gave them encouragement and it was game on from there-on in. There were long spells of the first 35 minutes we were in charge. It was the type of game we needed it to be. “We played forward, we were aggressive, carried the ball and messed up their two centre-backs. The two goals we scored we could have probably added to. Rangers’ response was good and half-time came at a good time for them. “Their [first] goal, we played a part in that. There was an opportunity to make them play a different pass and they were good enough to punish us. We became a bit excitable in the game. I loved the personality of the team."
