Derrick White sets Celtics 3-point record; Jayson Tatum, Payton Pritchard not far behind

Derrick White became the Celtics’ single-season 3-point king Monday night.
Whether he’ll still hold that crown at season’s end remains to be seen.
White’s fourth-quarter 3-pointer over center Zach Edey in Boston’s 117-103 win over the Memphis Grizzlies gave him sole possession of the franchise record for made threes in a season, breaking Isaiah Thomas’ previous mark of 245 set in 2016-17. He finished the game with 247.
But two other Celtics also are on pace to pass Thomas in the coming days.
Jayson Tatum is sitting at 240 made threes with seven regular-season games remaining. Payton Pritchard has 238, with nearly all of them coming off the bench. All three rank in the top seven in the NBA in that category; no other team even has two players in the top 15.
“We talked about it on the plane,” White told reporters after Monday’s game. “It’s pretty cool that there’s three of us so close to doing something special. Honestly, just looking back on my career, I never thought I’d be in this position, so I’m just thankful for the coaching staff, thankful for the guys on this team. I know I wouldn’t be able to do it without them. So I’ll hold it for now until one of them breaks my record, so that’s cool.”
Asked why he was surprised by his 3-point numbers, White replied: “I mean, did you watch me early in my career? I think it’s pretty self-explanatory.”
For his first several years in the NBA, the 30-year-old was not a renowned long-range shooter. He shot 34.4% from 3-point range over his 4 1/2 seasons with San Antonio, averaging just 1.3 makes per game. After his midseason trade to the Celtics in 2022, he made just 30.6% of his threes, then 31.3% that postseason, which culminated in the Golden State Warriors routinely leaving him unguarded during the 2022 NBA Finals.
That series was a turning point for White. He shot 38.1% from three on 4.8 attempts per game in 2022-23, then 39.6% on 6.8 attempts last season. He was above 40% in the 2023 and ’24 playoffs and went 4-for-8 in the clinching game of last year’s Finals against Dallas.
Since signing a four-year, $118 million contract extension last summer, White is shooting 38.1% from three while attempting 9.1 per game, by far the most of his career. He’s excelled in catch-and-shoot situations (41.2%) and has made 60.9% of his clutch 3-point attempts (14-for-23), defined as shots in the final five minutes or overtime when the score is within five points. Among the 37 players with at least 20 such attempts, no other shooter is above 45%.
“After the (2022) Finals, I feel like that was the biggest summer of my life,” White told reporters. “Obviously, what happened in the Finals and how I was being guarded, on that stage, it was one of the lowest points. I told Draymond (Green) after the Olympics that he kind of changed my life, because they weren’t guarding me. So I had to go in that summer, and me and my trainer, Marcus Mason, just focused on being consistent. And I think from that point on, I was just able to get better and better.”
Pritchard, the front-runner for NBA Sixth Man of the Year, is shooting 41.1% from three this season, a hair behind Sam Hauser’s team-leading 41.2%. Tatum has been less efficient (34.8%) but leads the Celtics in scoring, rebounding and assists en route to what likely will be his fourth straight first-team All-NBA selection.
“I’m just going to enjoy (the record) and see what happens the rest of the year,” White told reporters. “But if one of them breaks it, it couldn’t happen to someone better, and I’ll be happy for them.”
