Dholera chips in to make expats feel at home
@Source: indiatimes.com
Chinatowns are a ubiquitous feature across global metropolises. They are instantly recognizable - red lanterns, Mandarin lettering, dragons and elaborate pagodas - you could be in downtown San Francisco but feel like you are in Beijing. For locals it brings a touch of the exotic but for expats it delivers a slice of home. In Dholera, India’s first semiconductor cluster that is emerging as a hub for expat talent, the Gujarat government is aiming to recreate the “look and feel” of home countries for this tribe of globe trotters.Termed the “Global Tent City” in keeping with Dholera’s terrain, the multi-faceted agglomeration is expected to house food streets from across nations – Taiwan, Korea, Japan as well as some European nations. It will also include a high-end mall and a hotel or guesthouse to cater to the cosmopolitan tastes of the well-travelled employees.The idea is to make the expats feel more at home,” according to state officials who have conceived the facility. The semiconductor value chain is global, we are seeing interest from all over the world, (while) the government was initially toying with the idea of having a 'Taiwan village' and a 'Japan village' it was vetoed in favour of a more 'global' town square owing to the inflow of interest from companies across the globe,” a senior government official in Gujarat told ET. “It will also have shops showcasing the traditional handicrafts of these places as well as a venue for different cultural shows,” she said. 119669206To begin with, the proposed 'tent city' will be spread across ten acres in the 'Activation Area' of Dholera which includes allocated areas for industries, residential spaces, mixed-use, recreation, social infrastructure, and tourism.Also Read: Indian semiconductor companies eye global talent to spearhead operationsIn addition, there are allied projects like a multi cuisine food court that are among the other upcoming projects. The food court is designed to cater to investors, residents, and visitors, this food court will bring together a diverse range of culinary experiences, from Indian delicacies to global flavors! the Dholera official handle on X promises.A similar cultural hotspot is also due to come up at Sanand, about 100 kms away from Dholera, as the western state grows into India’s semiconductor manufacturing hub. Tata Electronics is setting up India's first fab for Rs 91,000 crore in Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) in partnership with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC). This is drawing a lot of Taiwanese professionals to the region.In Sanand, Kaynes Semicon, CG Semi and Micron are all establishing OSAT facilities. Traditionally, Gujarat has played host to many Japanese expats, which is now stoking demand for golf courses.“We are taking in all the feedback and are working on whatever will make these executives feel at home in Gujarat - be it sports facilities, entertainment, or food, the official said.While “the Dholera SPV (Special Purpose Vehicle) has already floated an RFP (Request for Proposal) for this project and it is being finalised, the contract will be awarded to a private player who will then take up the responsibility of designing, building and operating the Tent City inside the Activation area of the Dholera SIR. It will start off with about 10 acres, but we will keep expanding it, the person added.ET had reported earlier this month that homegrown semiconductor makers were rushing to tap talent globally to spearhead their nascent operations.Gujarat, with a longstanding prohibition on alcohol also has a significant population of vegetarians. This, along with what generally is a six-day work schedule makes it difficult to hire and retain expats, experts had said. However, companies are looking to attract foreign executives through robust pay packages.As more expats take up top roles in Indian companies, industry insiders said they miss their food and want to go out for a drink after a long day and that companies and now the government are looking to address this through various initiatives.
