Do ya think I’m speedy?: Rod Stewart bids to break 100m world record at 80

Rod Stewart is hoping to beat the 100-metre world record at age 80 as he asks ‘Do ya think I’m speedy’. Sir Rod has had a sprinting track installed in his back garden and is under an intense keep-fit regime that he hopes can send him Sailing over the finish line faster than anyone in his age group. The octogenarian rocker says he can get his Hot Legs over 100 metres in 19 seconds, but has his eyes set on the world record. He told AARP magazine: “I'm going to try and do 17 seconds, which I think is a world record for an 80-year-old.” But Sir Rod has a way to go to make another record. American Kenton Brown, 80, ran a 14.21-second race at the Nevada Senior Games in Las Vegas in October 2024 — within five seconds of Usain Bolt’s 100-metre record at the 2009 Beijing Olympics which stands to this day. Hoops-daft Rod has had to find other ways to keep fit after giving up football after a knee replacement. He partakes in underwater training, saying that it helps his vocals as well as his physical fitness, a tip he got from Ol’ Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra. Rod said: “We do a lot of underwater training, where the trainer throws a brick into the pool and I have to dive in, push the brick to the end of the pool, and come up. “Frank Sinatra once said to me, ‘Rod, the secret to being a great singer is having powerful lungs. Do lots of underwater swimming, where you hold your breath.’” Along with the sprinting track, Rod has an indoor pool, a golf course and a “massive” gym full of Celtic merch at his huge Essex estate, which he shares with wife Penny Lancaster. He has had the same personal trainer for 38 years, and will want to be in fine fettle for his Glastonbury legends set later this month.
