Doctor Who legend Tom Baker is returning to his iconic sci-fi role at the age of 91 for a new project, more than 40 years after hanging up his sonic screwdriver. The longest-serving Doctor on the BBC series first played the time traveller in 1974, becoming the fourth person to lead the series following the departure of Jon Pertwee. Known for his quirky personality and eccentric fashion sense, including his trademark long scarf, Tom's Doctor is seen by many as the definitive version of the character. Playing the Doctor for 172 episodes, Tom left fans devastated when he announced in 1981 that he was leaving the series, with Peter Davison becoming the fifth Doctor. After leaving Doctor Who, Tom went on to appear in shows such as Medics, Monarch of the Glen and Little Britain, for which he provided the narration. Despite audio Doctor Who stories being produced by Big Finish Productions and the BBC since the 1990s, Tom opted not to voice the Doctor until 2009, when he performed vocal work for five audio Doctor Who dramas. Voicing the Doctor once more in 2011 and in 2021's adaption of 1975 episode Revenge of the Cybermen, Tom is back for Big Finish's latest release The Fourth Doctor Adventures: The Hellwood Inheritanc. Joining Tom in the four-part adventure is Louise James, who played Tom's companion Leela from 1977 to 1978, having returned to the role last year for short film Time War in Leela vs the Time War. The new set of audio stories, written by Phil Mulryne, is available to buy now via download or on a limited collector's edition CD box set, which costs £24.99. The synopsis for The Helwood Inheritance reads: "When the Doctor and Leela are chased through the countryside by a headless knight, it's only the start of their problems. Because they are in the grounds of Hellwood Manor - the first safari park for ghosts! "Mistaken for parapsychical investigators, the TARDIS team are shown the mysterious 'ghost catcher' device that's made the whole scheme possible. But it can't really be catching ghosts, can it? What's really happening in Hellwood?" A seperate two-part story titled The Memory Thieves, also featured on the disc, sees the Doctor traveling to the colony world of New Pasithea, where people are losing their memories after strange electric pulses are detected in the forrest. Later on in the year, Jodie Whittaker will be providing her voice for Big Finish's The Thirteenth Doctor Adventures, with the Toxic Town actress departing Doctor Who in 2022. Meanwhile, Ncuti Gatwa will be back for his second season of Doctor Who on April 12, with this season boasting an intergalactic version of the Eurovision .
