The much-loved science fiction show will return for its fifteenth series on Saturday night. And while fans of the iconic series are desperate for the weekend to arrive to watch it, TV critics have been able to watch it ahead of the official release. The first episode, named The Robot Revolution, is directed by Peter Hoar and written by Russell T Davies. Actor Ncuti Gatwa, 32, returns as the Doctor, with Varada Sethu as Belinda Chandra, and Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday. Unfortunately critics have been quite harsh with their verdicts. Doctor Who’s return has been branded ‘unoriginal and uninspired’ as critics blasted the BBC for ‘failing to stick the landing’ ahead of the premiere this weekend The much-loved science fiction show will return for its fifteenth series on Saturday night - and while fans of the iconic series are desperate for the weekend to arrive to watch it, TV critics have been able to watch it ahead of the official release Radio Times' Louise Griffin said of the episode: 'The episode is dragged down in various ways, most of which we can't talk about just yet. 'Suffice to say that the episode's climax, involving a rather ludicrous reveal, fails to stick the landing. 'There's also some very on-the-nose writing, characters stating the obvious rather than allowing the episode's themes to speak for themselves…' Meanwhile Tom Power at Tech Radar said: 'The Doctor and Bel's robotic foes are largely unoriginal. 'In fact, I'd say, unique design notwithstanding, they're an uninspired amalgam of two of the most notorious enemies in Doctor Who's rogue gallery – those being, the Daleks and Cybermen. 'The Robot Revolution also moves at a break-neck pace. Episodes of Doctor Who are renowned for being breezy, but it feels like this one is particularly guilty of barrelling through its story without stopping to take a breath. 'That doesn't allow its most pertinent story beats to have the emotional impact they require.' Luckily there have also been more positive things said about it as well. The first episode of the fifteenth series, named The Robot Revolution, is directed by Peter Hoar and written by Russell T Davies. ANOTHER iconic BBC show is slapped with 'discriminatory' trigger warnings Variety's Scott Bryan said: 'The last few seconds of the first episode are particularly spine-tingling.' While The Times' Ben Dowell wrote: 'It is a fun, fast-paced hour of TV.' The new series is good news after in February it was revealed that the show was reportedly facing the axe. And star Ncuti was thought to be on the verge of quitting. A source told The Sun: 'Ncuti doesn’t want to be tied to the series beyond this and plans to relocate to Los Angeles with several Hollywood projects standing by for him. 'His team also see a lot of fan backlash from the series, and don’t want the perception of him still being The Doctor to get in the way of any future work. 'The show has been poorly managed in recent years and there’s a lot of people who’ve been working on this show for years and now being cast aside due to poor leadership.' The insider added that people had warned that the episodes were becoming 'too caught up on an agenda' rather than focusing 'telling a story', with those people apparently being 'shouted down' and 'ignored.' MailOnline contacted representatives of BBC and Ncuti for comment at the time. According to the publication, Ncuti's first series attracted between '2.25million and 3.18million viewers', much less than previous series'. However, a Doctor Who spokesperson added to The Sun: 'This story is incorrect. Doctor Who has not been shelved. 'As we have previously stated, the decision on season 3 will be made after season 2 airs. 'The deal with Disney+ was for 26 episodes — and exactly half of those still have to transmit.' Doctor Who hit our screens in 1963. There were 26 seasons between 1963 and 1989, and we are awaiting our fifteenth, which started in 2005. As a Time Lord, The Doctor has the capacity to regenerate when he is wounded or dying. After regenerating, he takes on a new appearance and personality. The concept of regenerating was added into the series after the First Doctor, William Hartnell, became ill and stepped down from his role. The first run of Doctor Who ended in 1989 before being revived in 2005 with Christopher Ecclestone as the Ninth Doctor.
