@Source: newsweek.com
Shohei Ohtani provided his first update about his progress from offseason shoulder surgery in the Dodgers' spring training camp Wednesday.The reigning National League MVP had surgery on his left shoulder, which he injured sliding into second base early in the Dodgers' World Series victory over the New York Yankees, last November.Although Ohtani played the remainder of the series after sustaining the injury, helping the Dodgers to a five-game victory, he underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn labrum days after the team hoisted the Commissioner's Trophy.Wednesday, Ohtani told reporters he is not fully recovered from the procedure, but should be ready to resume pitching in games in May, and be the Dodgers' designated hitter in Cactus League games this spring.Even though his ramp up to his regular season debut will be long, Ohtani told reporters he's expecting to throw his first bullpen of spring training this weekend.Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group reported that Ohtani "still feels some limited range of motion" as a hitter as a result of his shoulder procedure, but is "confident" he can work through it.Last season, Ohtani led the NL in home runs (54), runs scored (134) and RBIs (130). He became the first player in major league history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season. Ohtani finished with 59 steals in his first year of a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers.Ohtani underwent an internal brace procedure on his right (throwing) elbow in Sept. 2024, his final season under contract to the Los Angeles Angels. The recovery didn't impede him at the plate, but it prevented him from pitching last year.More news: Dodgers Name Japanese-Born Pitcher Opening Day Starter vs Cubs in TokyoPlunkett notes that Ohtani isn't sure how intense his first bullpen session will be this weekend. But Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic relayed via Twitter/X that Ohtani said he has been throwing all his pitches — including a sweeper — on flat ground.Ohtani went 10-5 with a 3.14 ERA in 23 starts for the Angels in 2023, his last season as a pitcher.More news: Dodgers Begin Contract Extension Talks With Impending Free AgentThe Dodgers initially described the injury to Ohtani's left shoulder as a subluxation, or a partial dislocation, after he was caught stealing in Game 2 of the World Series.
