Does size matter? In the NRL, it’s not as much as it used to
@Source: brisbanetimes.com.au
It’s the age-old question. Does size matter?
In rugby league, the answer is “not as much as it used to”. The Penrith Panthers side that won the club’s fourth successive premiership in 2024 boasted the likes of James Fisher-Harris (now a Warriors player), Moses Leota, Isaah Yeo and Lindsay Smith, who weighed at least 106kg, in its forward pack.
Yet, the Panthers are one of the smallest sides in the NRL. Their forward pack ranked among the bottom five for size – and their backs don’t crack the top 10, either.
So, is size becoming less of a factor in rugby league? We examined the heights and weights of every NRL club’s best 17 players in an attempt to establish how much raw physique matters.
