Dolphin gets new lease on life after crashing onto fishing boat off New Zealand's coast
@Source: indiatimes.com
A group of Kiwi fishermen experienced a horror of their lifetime on Friday (local time) when a dolphin weighing over 900 pounds (400 kg) seemingly dropped from the sky, before crash-landing on their small vessel. The 11-foot-long bottlenose dolphin jumped aboard the roughly 16-foot boat when Dean Harrison, the owner of the boat, was out on a fishing expedition with two of his companions. The fishermen were reportedly out fishing near the Hole in the Rock , a scenic spot off the far north coast of New Zealand’s North Island.No easy way outThe vessel owner said that no one was badly injured in the incident, as per the Associated Press. One minute everything was fine and then just like lightning striking, there was a big dolphin in our boat thrashing around and breaking everything, Harrison told the global news agency. After the trio gathered themselves, they were faced by a not-so-easy problem as they had to return the majestic creature to the water. However, the dolphin's size presented a challenge for them.Every fishing rod snappedThe loud thud of the dolphin dropping onto the open-top boat was followed by its flailing, which, according to Harrison, snapped every fishing rod they had there. One of his fishing mates sustained minor injuries to his arm when the creature grazed his shoulder and back, the Associated Press said in its report. Unable to figure out a way to drop the dolphin into the sea, the men reportedly alerted New Zealand's conservation agency, which instructed them to reach a boat ramp an hour away.Hose and towels to the rescueDuring the course of the trip, Harrison and his companions reportedly took to using a hose and a damp towel to keep the juvenile male dolphin wet and protected from the sun. The dolphin was eventually rescued and released into the sea using a tractor, as per AP. The workers involved in the rescue efforts named the creature Tohu , which is Maori for sign . Harrison also reportedly named his boat Tohu .New-found perspectiveReflecting on the episode, he said the incident gave him and his fellow fishermen a story to tell. He also told AP that the situation ended in a much better manner than it could have otherwise ended, highlighting the race against time that the trio overcame to save Tohu's life.FAQsWhere did the incident take place?The dolphin jumped onto the vessel when Dean Harrison, the owner of the boat, was out on a fishing expedition with two of his companions.
