Donald Trump booed by football fans on anniversary of attempted assassination

A chorus of boos erupted throughout MetLife Stadium as the US National Anthem played before the FIFA Club World Cup final, when a shot of President Donald Trump appeared on the jumbotron. The harsh reception comes a year to the day that Thomas Crooks tried to assassinate Trump with an assault rifle, clipping his ear and killing one attendee at the rally in Pennsylvania. The 20-year-old was killed by counter snipers seconds after opening fire on Trump while he was the presumed Republican nominee for the presidential race. The footage quickly switched, but the crowd followed up with chants of "USA, USA!" as the Star Spangled Banner performance concluded. Initially, cheers were heard as a fleet of three helicopters soared above MetLife Stadium at approximately 2:30pm (local time), signalling Trump's arrival in New Jersey. Trump had been invited to the FIFA Club World Cup final by Infantino and received a separate invitation from New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy. Having been a vocal supporter of FIFA since his return to office, Trump proudly saluted alongside Infantino during the National Anthem. It's worth noting that a sizeable portion of the crowd consisted of fans from England and France, there to cheer on Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain in the final. Nonetheless, the boos directed at Trump were considerable when his image appeared on screen, reports the Irish Star . This is not Trump's first foray into sports events during his second term; he previously attended a college football match between Alabama and Georgia, a NASCAR event, and Super Bowl LIX between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs. On this occasion, Trump lent his support to soccer as the FIFA Club World Cup drew to a close, ahead of the US, Mexico, and Canada co-hosting the FIFA World Cup next year. Ahead of the final, FIFA inaugurated a new office within Trump Tower. During a briefing at the new premises on Saturday, Infantino discussed the president's backing. "He explained to me his son loved football," Infantino said. "And of course, when you're parents, you love what your children love. So, I would think he loves [soccer]." Infantino also highlighted that Trump was instrumental to FIFA's plans, asserting that hosting the Club World Cup and the World Cup would be nearly unfeasible without his collaboration. "He embraced immediately the importance of the FIFA Club World Cup, and the World Cup next year," Infantino stated. "He established a White House task force chaired by himself, which we all participated in because events like the Club World Cup and World Cup are huge, huge, huge events. Thousands of people coming (in), going out, and traveling to games. "You cannot even think about organizing an event like this ... such a competition without the full engagement and full support of the government." One aspect Infantino has been encouraged to restructure ahead of the World Cup is scheduling, as several players have grumbled about the intense heat this summer. "Of course, the heat is an issue... We need to look at what we can do better (next year) in America," Infantino admitted. "We also have stadiums that are covered and we need to utilise these stadiums more in the day. These are questions that we have to study. We can improve. We have to improve. And we will improve."
