'Don't Use Index Finger': Jasprit Bumrah Breaks Down His Bowling Technique
@Source: news18.com
Jasprit Bumrah is arguably India’s greatest fast bowler of all time. He made his international debut in January 2016 against Australia during an ODI match played at the Sydney Cricket Ground, and since then he has impressed with his performances in all three formats of the game in every part of the world. Bumrah has a unique bowling action which makes it difficult for bowlers to tackle him. The 31-year-old fast bowler from Ahmedabad is in England these days to take part in the five-match India-England Test series and ahead of the start of fourth day’s play of the series opener in Leeds, he opened up about his bowling technique.
During an interview with Sky Sports Cricket, Bumrah was asked about the use of fingers while bowling and in reply he said, “I’m slightly different. I don’t use my index finger, I use the big finger all the time. So I try to flick the ball. When I want to bowl an outswing, I flick it this way. And when I want to bowl the inswing, I flick it inside because I can’t usually change my arm part too much because of the way my bowling style is.”
“I usually use my second finger for whichever swing I want to do because that’s how I’ve always bowled. And I’ve learned this over the years as well that I can’t really change my arm part. Yes, I do change from where I want to bowl from the crease but I try to flick it when I want to bowl it either way,” Bumrah added.

Bumrah, who is world No. 1 Test bowler, opened India’s bowling attack in the first innings of Leeds Test and picked up five wickets for 83 runs in 24.4 overs. The five-wicket haul in the first innings helped him become first Indian bowler to take three Test fifers in England and he also equalled Kapil Dev’s record of most five-wicket hauls for India in Tests played away from home.
Bumrah has 11 five-wicket hauls to his name in 36 WTC matches and 150 wickets in 32 Test matches played so far in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) countries.
