In late 2023, Outerloop Games released a turn-based RPG from a rarely seen perspective. Thirsty Suitors delivered fun turn-based battles, over-the-top slapstick humor, and a heartwarming story focused on culture, family, and cooking. It was one of the best games to release that year, which gave an extra sense of anticipation for Outerloop's next project. Dosa Divas: One Last Meal isn't officially being called a spiritual successor to Thirsty Suitors, but I recognized the formula at this year's Summer Game Fest when I gave it a look. Revealed during this year's Day of the Devs: Summer Game Fest Edition, Dosa Divas follows two sisters, Amani and Samara, along with their giant mech named Goddess. There's a third sister in the family, but she's the villain of this story, a corporate overlord named Lina who keeps the populace docile with her bland and flavorless brand of prepackaged slop, appropriately named LinaMeals. The idea is to explore the world and gradually help the townspeople overcome the corporate machine while also enjoying a new dish along the way. The demo's overworld was crawling with Lina's army of fighting lawyers, which gave way to an updated version of the Thirsty Suitors formula. Battles are turn-based with classic Super Mario RPG/Paper Mario-style timed hits implemented to hit harder or reduce incoming damage. Each foes has a different weakness and that comes from different flavors, like Spicy or Sweet. Hitting an enemy with their associated weakness can cause them to become full, which can skip their turn. It's a fun spin on the formula established by Outerloop's last game, especially when it comes time to hit a little harder with Goddess' mechanical arms. Outside of battles, players will collect ingredients and talk to the various denizens of the nearby towns. Some will ask for a meal, which will give way to Dosa Divas' other main component, which is cooking. Cooking isn't the choreographed dance number that it is in Thirsty Suitors, but this time, the sisters go into an alternate realm to prepare meals. This is where players will engage with different mini-games to prepare dishes of various flavors. The right flavor dish handed to the right person can complete quests and push the story forward. Thirsty Suitors will always have a place in my heart for its touching story, one that centered largely on family and culture. Dosa Divas is looking to follow those footsteps in many ways, right down to Shacknews Best NPC of 2023 Uncle Hinti making his return for tutorial tips. We're hopeful for more of that signature Outerloop flavor when Dosa Divas comes to PC in 2026. This preview is based on an early demo played on-site at Summer Game Fest: Play Days.
