Dragons’ Den stars ‘break protocol’ with history-making offer

A couple from Warwickshire have made Dragons' Den history with two firsts on the BBC One competition. Charlene, a former freelance illustrator, and Simon, an investment banker, appeared in a 2024 episode of the show, which is being re-aired on Thursday, June 19. The pair, who have a three-year-old daughter who inspired their product, were seeking assistance for their start-up, Sooper Books, which is an online library of children's stories, including retold fairy tales and popular titles. Their business, initially free, was launched during lockdown with their own £2,500 investment and quickly became popular on Google, as well as with families and teachers. Despite amassing 14 million views, they soon needed additional investors, reports Gloucestershire Live . They had started to earn £90,000 from a small subscription, but to increase their Google presence, they needed to limit subscriptions and focus on traffic, monetising through ads and sponsorships. They turned to the Dragons for help - but Charlene and Simon weren't asking for much. In fact, they were only asking for a single pound. Their offer, in return for 1% of the business, marked a Dragons' Den first as the lowest ever ask. The Dragons praised the couple after their poetic pitch and their creation of a short story featuring the BBC stars. "I'll say congratulations on the short story," began an impressed Peter Jones. "And I also want to say a massive congratulations because Sooper Books is going to go down in Dragons' Den history. "It's the first time ever we've had somebody valuing their business at £100." Despite their modest valuation, Simon dropped a bombshell when he revealed the business was actually worth a staggering £3,200,000. They wanted to give the Dragons an opportunity to involve themselves in something truly special. "If we had Dragons involved, this could help millions and millions of people," Simon articulated his vision for their potential future collaboration. In addition to the Dragons' interest, Simon and Charlene had already drawn high-profile investments from Princess Beatrice and Monzo's founder amongst others. Touker Suleyman didn't hide his excitement: "I would love to be on this journey with you, and I'm sure all of us could add value. Shame you haven't got 5%, give 1% to each and we'll all help you." However, he was onto something, and in a rare move, Peter asked the other Dragons to join him for a moment of deliberation at the wall, breaking the traditional protocol of the entrepreneurs taking to the back of the room to discuss negotiations. "A first in Den history, as all five Dragons head to the wall for a potential counteroffer," the show's narrator captured the moment. And following their team-up, Peter, Touker, Steven Bartlett, Deborah Meaden, and Sara Davies were all on board to offer one pound each, leaving Charlene and Simon in tears. Overwhelmed by the experience and support, Charlene emotionally expressed their gratitude and their eagerness to work with the unanimous backing of the Dragons. "Peter, Steven, Deborah, Sara, and Touker, we'd love to accept your offer," she tearfully said. "We're joining your family," Peter replied, commenting on what has become a historic pitch for its lowest valuation and smallest ask. "I love it when a story has a happy ending," Steven said happily. "I just cannot believe what's just happened, and I got very emotional with it," Charlene admitted to the camera, visibly moved. "To have five Dragons on board is just a dream come true," Simon added with excitement. Dragons' Den is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
