For Stanley Gene, the journey has come full circle. From a young boy dreaming of playing for the Kumuls to a seasoned professional with years of experience in the UK’s Super League, Gene has returned to Papua New Guinea to empower local rugby league coaches.
“The timing is right,” Gene expressed. “As a kid who dreamed of playing for the Kumuls, I understand the challenges.
Now, I’m eager to guide the next generation.” His appointment as Coach Development Manager for the PNGRFL is more than a job; it’s a personal mission.
Gene’s focus is on bridging communication gaps and providing mentorship.
“I’m uniquely positioned as a local who has experienced professional rugby and coaching in the UK,” he said. “I want to share that knowledge with our coaches here.”
PNGRFL CEO Stanley Hondina highlights Stanley Gene’s return from England as a significant boost for the PNG rugby league.
Gene’s extensive playing career and recent Super League coaching experience will be invaluable in developing coaches at all levels, which is crucial for the continued improvement of the game in PNG.
“His recent experience in coaching in the Super League and Academy programs will be of great benefit to our clubs,” said Hondina.
His approach is rooted in empathy and understanding, recognizing the challenges faced by local coaches.
He aims to create an open environment where they can freely seek guidance, addressing any hesitations they may have.
Gene’s return is not just about imparting technical skills; it’s about inspiring and empowering coaches to reach their full potential, ensuring a lasting legacy for rugby league in Papua New Guinea.
