Drivers heading for Europe urged to check rules, and make sure they're covered

UK holidaymakers heading for the continent have been warned to make sure they have the right documents. M otorhome insurance specialist Safeguard has warned motorhome and campervan owners they need sufficient breakdown cover before they cross the Channel. Safeguard said one of its customers breaks down in Europe almost every day - 25 a month on average - and an average of two customers need their vehicle brought back to the UK every month. Mark Sheppard, senior trading manager at Safeguard, said: “Owners can often neglect to take out breakdown cover when travelling abroad. This may not be included in your European policy as standard, so it’s always worth checking your policy documents and confirming with your insurance provider if in any doubt. “Breakdown cover is particularly important for older or low-value vehicles, where the cost of repairs and repatriation could exceed their value.” The warning comes as thousands of motorhome and campervan owners will travel through Europe in the remaining weeks of summer. Before you set off, it’s always a good idea to check the regulations for the country you plan to visit. In general, you’ll need to take the following documentation with you: • A UK sticker, prominently displayed, not a traditional GB one, which is now obsolete • Your logbook (V5C) • Your driving licence • Your MOT certificate • A copy of your insurance policy • A green card for countries outside the EU Throughout Europe, especially in France, many cities operate low-emission zones in a bid to reduce pollution and improve air quality. To avoid picking up costly fines as you follow your holiday route, motorhome and campervan owners should register for either stickers or certification, depending on your vehicle’s level of emissions. Urban Access Regulations in Europe is a great source of information on local rules. “To successfully navigate low-emission zones as a motorhome owner, plan your routes in advance and familiarise yourself with the designated low-emission vehicles and zones,” said Mark. “It’s crucial for owners to be aware of and comply with the enforcement measures in place to avoid penalties and contribute to cleaner air in European cities.”
