Drivers issued warning as Storm Floris forecast to bring up to 70mph winds

Motorists have been warned to extra care when driving on Monday with Storm Floris set to batter northern parts of the UK. A Met Office amber warning for wind is in effect in Scotland from 10am until 10pm. Whilst a yellow warning for the northern half of England, including the North West, will be in place from 6am until midnight. The 'unseasonably disruptive' storm is expected to bring very strong winds of 40-50mph inland and up to 70mph in coastal areas. Forecasts for Greater Manchester predict heavy rain at points and winds approaching 50mph. Avanti West Coast have also advised passengers not to travel north of Preston. And those driving in the North West, Yorkshire and Humber and North East have also been advised the roads could also be treacherous. In an alert issued today, National Highways said: "Storm Floris will bring strong winds across the network through Monday with Storm force winds expected for the North West, Yorkshire and Humber and North East regions. Join our Traffic and Travel WhatsApp group HERE "Many inland areas are likely to see gusts of 40-50mph with 60-70 mph expected along exposed coasts and high ground. "High sided vehicles, caravans, motorbikes and other vulnerable vehicles are advised to take extra care when travelling due to the increased risk." Their advice for driving in high winds includes slowing down and focussing on the road ahead due to the possiblity of debris, avoiding exposed sections of road, keeping 'good control' of your vehicle with two hands on the wheel and looking out for side winds when crossing bridges or passing high-sided vehicles. In a separate alert, Traffic Scotland said winds could reach 80mph to 90mph on exposed coasts, hills and bridges. "Driving in these conditions can be dangerous, for yourself and other road users" they said. "If you must drive, you can do this more safely by taking the following actions drive slowly to minimise the impact of wind gusts."
