Early Acupuncture Intervention Boosts Stroke Recovery

Stroke is becoming a major public health concern in Fiji, especially in remote island communities where access to rehabilitation is limited and long-term care costs are prohibitive. In response, VUDA Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic, led by sixth-generation TCM practitioner Dr. Pai, has launched a “Stroke Recovery Initiative” featuring early intervention with acupuncture, herbal medicine, and moxibustion — bringing hope and healing to stroke survivors across the islands. Through early application of traditional Chinese therapies, many patients have experienced significant improvement in mobility, speech, and daily function. One notable case is 64-year-old Ishwar Chand, who suffered left-sided paralysis after a stroke. Within one month of consistent TCM treatment, he regained the ability to speak and stand, returning to daily life. His recovery video garnered over 165,000 views and likes on social media, inspiring trust in the power of acupuncture. “Stroke recovery is a race against time, especially in tropical climates where muscle atrophy sets in faster,” says Dr. Pai. “Many people believe they must wait until their condition stabilizes before beginning rehab, but traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes early intervention to unblock meridians and preserve vital functions.” To raise public awareness, VUDATCM promotes the “FAST+” stroke response guide: • F – Face drooping • A – Arm weakness • S – Speech difficulty • T – Time to seek help • + – Ask for TCM assessment “When the fragrance of Fijian herbs meets the warmth of Chinese moxa, healing bridges cultures,” Dr. Pai reflects. VUDATCM is committed to serving the local community with integrative care, aiming to restore health and hope to every family touched by stroke.
